iron fist

As the year flies by, the list of canceled TV shows piles up.

While there's been somewhat of a quiet period since May, some networks have cut shows throughout the summer and fall.

Comedy Central recently canceled "Detroiters" after two seasons, and "Another Period" after three seasons.

This fall, Netfix canceled all Marvel shows except "Jessica Jones," which means that "Iron Fist,""Luke Cage," and "Daredevil" are done for good.

ABC canceled the previously renewed "Roseanne" revival in late May, after Roseanne Barr posted a racist tweet about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. However, ABC debuted a spin-off called "The Conners" without Barr.

In other notable cancellations, USA's critically acclaimed "Mr. Robot" will end with its upcoming fourth season, and CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" is ending after 12 seasons.

We'll update this list as more are announced.

Here are all the shows that have been canceled this year, including those from networks and Netflix:

The 5 biggest snubs of this year's Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, which are voted on by actors

the americans season 6

  • The nominations for the 25th Annual Screen Actor's Guild (SAG) Awards are here, and they're filled with surprises and snubs.
  • Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell didn't get nominated for their leading roles on the excellent final season of "The Americans."
  • "Bohemian Rhapsody," a movie that has only been praised for one performance, got a nomination for best ensemble cast.
  • We're confused.

We thought actors (people who professionally act) would be really good at voting for acting awards, but we were wrong!

The SAG Awards, which take place a few weeks before the Oscars every year, is an awards show hosted by the Screen Actor's Guild. Actors vote on their peers in film and television, but the focus is performances, with awards for best lead and supporting actors and actresses, and awards for best ensemble casts.

Usually SAG nominees are a bit better than the bigger shows like the Oscars and Golden Globes, because SAG voters really know their craft. But not in 2018.

This year's nominations are filled with shocking snubs and unpleasant surprises, including no nomination for the leads on FX's "The Americans," and a strange outstanding ensemble cast nomination for "Bohemian Rhapsody."

The 25th Annual SAG Awards ceremony will be broadcast live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, January 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Here are the five biggest snubs and surprises from the SAG Awards nominations:

Matthew Rhys didn't get nominated for outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series, but Jason Bateman and John Krasinski did.

The nominees:

Jason Bateman, “Ozark”
Sterling K. Brown, “This Is Us”
Joseph Fiennes, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
John Krasinski, “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”
Bob Odenkirk, “Better Call Saul”

Rhys's portrayal of the KGB spy Philip Jennings who's somewhat seduced by the American life has been the absolute best performance on television for years, overshadowed by more popular AMC shows. But this was finally his year. On the sixth season, Rhys did his best work to date, which included Philip's classic line dancing, an emotional final trip to McDonald's, but also an intense ten minute stand-off in a parking garage. Rhys carried carried the scene while allowing his co-stars Keri Russell and Noah Emmerich to shine, too. Rhys should have had a nomination, and he should have won.

"The Americans" earned a SAG nomination for best ensemble cast on a TV drama, and while its cast has always been the best (and the most ignored), the lead performances deserve recognition the most.

Keri Russell didn't get nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, but two actresses from "Ozark" did.

The nominees:

Julia Garner, “Ozark”
Laura Linney, “Ozark”
Elisabeth Moss, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Sandra Oh, “Killing Eve”
Robin Wright, “House of Cards”

For the past five years, Russell, like her co-star Matthew Rhys, has been doing some of the best acting in television history on "The Americans" as the cold, dutiful, but sometimes conflicted KGB spy Elizabeth Jennings. Her character made some major advancement during the final season, and Russell captured every feeling, from the obvious to the subtle.

And yet, two actresses from Netflix's second season original series "Ozark," a mediocre drama with very good performances (not great), got nominated over Russell. Laura Linney is, as always good on the show, but she's not doing anything particularly groundbreaking. The same goes for her co-star and fellow nominee Julie Garner, who had a major role on "The Americans" and appeared briefly on the final season earlier this year.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" got nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for some reason.

The nominees:

“A Star Is Born”
“Black Panther”
“BlacKkKlansman”
“Bohemian Rhapsody”
“Crazy Rich Asians”

This particular nomination is truly baffling, considering the only positive reception this movie has gotten is strictly related to Rami Malek's performance as Freddie Mercury. While there are other people in this movie, like  Mike Meyers apparently, no one is talking about them. You probably, like me, just found out that Mike Meyers is in this movie in the previous sentence.

It feels like no SAG members even saw the movie, and just picked the movie out of a hat. Or maybe they just voted for it to avoid giving "Avengers: Infinity War" -- the biggest crossover event of all time -- a nomination in the category.

7 details you may have missed on the fall finale of 'Riverdale'

Warning: Spoilers ahead for season three, episode eight of "Riverdale," titled "Outbreak."

No one is safe after Wednesday's episode of "Riverdale"

During the mid-season finale of the hit CW series, Archie heads into Canada to hide from Hiram, Riverdale is under quarantine, FP and Jughead can't get back into their hometown, and Hiram is revealed to be in cahoots with the Gargoyle King

But not everything went horribly for the town's residents. Cheryl and Toni are moving in together, Betty and the other youths escaped from the Sisters of Quiet Mercy after learning about the history of "Gryphons and Gargoyles," and fans finally got to meet Gladys and Jellybean Jones.

As always, the CW show included some pop culture and comic references. We worked with Archie Comics to find seven details you may have missed.

The episode title "Outbreak" comes from the 1995 movie of the same name.

"Outbreak" was about an outbreak of a fictional virus that affected a small town in California which was then quarantined by the Army, sort of like Riverdale being quarantined.

Jellybean is Jughead's sister from the comics.

In the original comics, Forsythia "Jellybean" Jonesis Jughead's baby sister.

Gladys is Jughead's mom in the comics.

Gladys doesn't work on cars in the comics and is often shown trying to get Jughead to do his chores and help around the house.

'Riverdale' fans finally know how the deadly role-playing game 'Gryphons and Gargoyles' started

Griffins and Gargoyles

Warning: Spoilers ahead for season three, episode eight of "Riverdale."

"Gryphons and Gargoyles" (G&G) is a dangerous game on "Riverdale."

The role-playing game, similar to "Dungeons and Dragons," is behind five deaths so far — RIP Dilton, Ben, Principal Featherhead, Warden Norton, and Joaquin — and it's sure to affect more residents as the third season of the hit CW show progresses.

Betty and Jughead are working to uncover the mystery surrounding the game, and during Wednesday's mid-season finale, Betty learned just how exactly the game started.

Here's what we know.

The first introduction of the game was mysterious.

Dilton Jughead Ben riverdale

During the season three premiere, Jughead tries to ask Ben and Dilton what they are playing at Pop's Diner. Dilton tries to answer, but all he gets out is "Gryphons and..." before Ben tells him to shut up.

Later, when Jughead is preparing to go to Archie's trial, Dilton knocks on Jug's door in a panic.

"Ben and I thought it was just a game, a stupid role-playing game, but it's not," he says. "It's so much more. He's real."

When Jughead asks who, Dilton eventually responds with, "The Gargoyle King."

Paper covered in weird symbols and stick creatures found in Jughead's home lead him to the woods where he finds Ben and Dilton unresponsive and kneeling in front of an altar with symbols carved into their backs and chalices next to their bodies. Dilton dies in the park due to cyanide consumption. Ben recovers in the hospital but then says he isn't afraid to "ascend" like Dilton was and leaps to his death out of the window.

Betty and Jughead learn that Ethel is also playing the game and confront her about it. They learn about Dilton's secret bunker in the woods, and upon exploring the bunker, they discover that the poisoned chalice Ben and Dilton drank from is part of "G&G."

Ethel reveals that the rulebook is referred to as the "scripture."

How is the game played?

Ethel riverdale

When Betty and Jug explore the bunker for the first time, they find coins with the Gargoyle King on them, drawings of the king, and various knick-knacks from the game.

The game consists of dice and quests that the players must complete. The players pick characters, follow quest cards, listen to the game master, and sometimes, they dress up in costumes to match their characters.

On the flashback episode, the parents find the game in a teacher's desk and play it. It's made clear that the game master designs the quests and game board and incorporates them into the real world.

Read more: 'Riverdale' fans finally know what the parents' big secret is and there's a murder involved

the midnight club riverdaleIn present day, Jughead goes to the bunker and meets Ethel to play the game. She is dressed in her Princess Etheline gown and has him choose a character. He picks the Hellcaster.

"Good choice," she says. "That was Ben's avatar. I was supposed to ascend with him but then he betrayed me and finished the game with Dilton instead."

After getting through part of the game, Ethel presents Jughead with two chalices. When he incredulously asks if one of them is poisoned, she says it's "gargoyle blood." He drinks it to get the manual and is fine. But before she hands it over to him, she makes him kiss her because it's all part of the "scripture."

Ethel then drinks from the other chalice and starts to get ill. He saves her life by getting her to the hospital. She denies being suicidal and then threatens Jughead if he spills the secrets.

"I told him you were worthy enough to spread his gospel," she tells him.

The Gargoyle King himself is a terrifying creature who seems to be behind the rules of the game, but his exact tie to the game is unknown.

The game has more of a history than previously expected.

Ethel Gryphons and Gargoyles the sisters riverdale

During the mid-season finale, Ethel and Betty discover that "G&G" was created by patients at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy."

Betty figures out that the Gargoyle King sightings in the group home are brought on by hallucinations from Fizzle Rocks. She convinces Ethel to believe her, and the two take Sister Woodhouse hostage. They take her to the Gargoyle King's "chambers" and demand answers about the king, the game, and Hiram's involvement.

Read more: Everything we know about the mysterious group home the Sisters of Quiet Mercy on 'Riverdale'

"Misbehaving children have been brought to this room since the asylum opened. That statue scared them into submission," Woodhouse says of the basement room and gargoyle statue. "Some of them, the more disturbed ones, created a fantasy realm, a game, to cope with the fear of the one they named "the Gargoyle King."

Read more: Everything we know about the 'gruesome' Gargoyle King on 'Riverdale'

She continues: "We embraced it as a therapeutic tool, and it worked because it embeds itself in the minds of the players. It makes them complacent, focuses them."

Betty asks her how the game could have gotten out of the group home.

"It was never meant to leave these walls," Woodhouse says. "It's too powerful, a game born of madness."

Jughead has a theory.

jughead riverdale

During the earlier episodes of season three, someone, possibly Ethel, distributed a manual to every student's locker at Riverdale High.

"By next weekend, almost every student at Riverdale High would be playing 'Gryphons and Gargoyles,' and the real game was just beginning," Jughead says.

As Jughead plays the game, he becomes a level three-game master and leads his players on quests. When Betty goes to tell him about their parent’s secret, he tells her that he is working to ascend and meet the Gargoyle King.

He says that their parents playing the game means that his theory is correct: "We have been playing this game for a lot longer than we know and off board."

He says the gang fights and struggles they have had to deal with are all just part of the game. He also points out an interesting fact about the game's location.

"Eldervair, the realm of 'Gryphons and Gargoyles' is an anagram for Riverdale," he said. "The whole game is an analog for Riverdale. The game only exists in Riverdale, that's why we couldn't find it on the web. It's all connected. It's all one big narrative that's still being written and played."

When Jughead and Archie find themselves in the town of Athens, Jughead finds a group of kids playing "G&G." That means the game is expanding more than they could have anticipated. As for who spread the game to the masses is still unknown, but we know that "G&G" isn't going away any time soon.

Gayle King says if her best friend Oprah ran for president in 2020, she'd pick a 'seasoned politician' as a running mate

  • Gayle King would not be Oprah Winfrey's running mate if Winfrey were to run for president.
  • King said if Oprah were to consider running, she'd pick a "seasoned politician." The "CBS This Morning" host qualified that she's not confirming Winfrey's plan to run.
  • Winfrey has continued to deny a 2020 presidential campaign.

Gayle King knows her best friend Oprah Winfrey wouldn't choose her as a running mate if Winfrey were to run for president.

On Wednesday night's episode of Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen," a fan asked the 63-year-old journalist who Winfrey would pick as a partner if she were to run. King took a guess, but also ruled herself out and said, "Definitely not me."

"She would pick a seasoned politician...if she did," King said. "This is all hypothetical. This is all fantasy."

Following an inspirational Time's Up speech Winfrey gave during the 2018 Golden Globes in which she said, "A new day is on the horizon," chatter began to take off on social media urging her to consider a presidential run in 2020.

In February 2018, Winfrey told People magazine that she started to pray when friends and fans began asking her if she'd run but she said she didn't receive a sign telling her to pursue it.

"'God, if you think I'm supposed to run, you gotta tell me, and it has to be so clear that not even I can miss it,'" Oprah said. "And I haven't gotten that."

Later that same month, Oprah went on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and denied any chance at a political campaign.

"Where do I look into the camera?" she said. "I am definitely not running for president."

Winfrey has continued to deny a future in politics, telling British Vogue in August that she couldn't handle it.

"In that political structure — all the non-truths, the bulls---, the crap, the nastiness, the backhanded backroom stuff that goes on — I feel like I could not exist," Winfrey said. "I would not be able to do it. It's not a clean business. It would kill me."

The 20 most heartbreaking TV show deaths of all time

$
0

13 ned stark

  • If you've been grieving the loss of a TV character for the past few years, you're not alone.
  • Shows across all genres kill off characters we've come to know and love.
  • While some are more of a shock, and others we've clearly seen coming, they all hurt the same.

Television writers are masterful creatures. They write these complex characters, make us fall madly in love with them, and then kill them right there in front of us.

Through the years we've seen some of our favorite characters — who, let's be honest, are essentially real people to us — walk both onto and off of the silver screen. When their storylines come to a tragic end, we grieve for them as if we've lost one of our dear friends. Then there are the times we've sobbed unexpectedly at deaths we didn't think would affect us at all, probably because the character was a less-than-stellar human being. Alas, there we are, eyeballs glued to the screen, tissues glued to our eyeballs.

Whether you've felt heartbreak in real life or not, you've definitely felt it from the comfort of your couch — or bathtub, or bedroom, or wherever it is you consume television. And if you haven't — well, first of all, I don't believe you — here are 20 of the most heartbreaking deaths on TV for you to check out in no particular order.

Spoiler alert: If you're years behind on TV, you may want to turn back now.

Derek Shepherd of "Grey's Anatomy" died on season 11, episode 21.

Patrick Dempsey's character — also nicknamed McDreamy — died after saving the lives of a family out on a scenic road. His car got hit by a truck and he was taken to a small hospital nearby where, in classic TV irony, the only person who could have saved him was himself.

The episode shows his wife, Dr. Meredith Grey, at the hospital with him, grieving and telling him it's OK for him to "go." Viewers around the nation sobbed as they mourned the 11-season love story that finally came to an end.

50 TV and movie remakes that are better than the original

$
0

steve carell the office

  • Some series like "The Office,""Shameless," and "Parenthood" were perceived as better than the original for many viewers and critics.
  • In some cases, remakes of "The Parent Trap" and "A Star is Born" have been more successful or better received than their predecessors.
  • Netflix reboots like "Queer Eye" and "One Day at a Time" have been well-received by critics and audiences alike.

With so many TV and movie reboots, remakes, and sequels, original films and series seem to be in short supply. Although many remakes can't compete with their predecessors, plenty of remakes have been more well-received than the originals.

Here are 50 television and movie remakes that many critics and viewers believe are better than the originals.

1. "The Maltese Falcon" (1941) improved upon an adaptation made a decade earlier.

In 1941 filmmaker John Huston released the film noir "The Maltese Falcon" to great acclaim. The Humphrey Bogart vehicle was a remake of the 1931 film of the same name that starred Bebe Daniels and Ricardo Cortez. Both were adaptations of a novel by Dashiell Hammett.

Revered film critic Roger Ebert revisited the film in 2001 in an extensive review. "It's all style," Ebert wrote. "It isn't violence or chases, but the way the actors look, move, speak and embody their characters. Under the style is attitude: Hard men, in a hard season, in a society emerging from Depression and heading for war, are motivated by greed and capable of murder."

2. "The Ten Commandments" (1956) has the same director as the 1923 version.

"The Ten Commandments" is a biblical epic released in 1956 and was, at the time, the most expensive film ever made. The Cecil B. DeMille picture was a remake of the silent film of the same name DeMille himself made in 1923. Film critics have called the 1956 installment one of the best films ever made.

"There is no other picture like it,"The Hollywood Reporter critic James Powers wrote in 1956. "There will be none. If it could be summed up in a word, the word would be sublime. And the man responsible for that, when all is said and done is Cecil B. DeMille."

3. "Airplane!" (1980) was a satirical remake of "Zero Hour!" (1957)

The comedy "Airplane!" is often included in critics' lists as one of the best comedic films of all time. The movie, directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, starred an immense cast of talented comedians including Leslie Nielsen, Julie Hagerty, and Robert Hays. Though it lampooned many movies in the disaster film genre, it particularly parodied the 1957 film "Zero Hour!" and even took large chunks of dialogue straight from its screenplay.

"The streamlined disaster movie riff... is pure quadruple-distilled comedy, with a gag rate of about three hilarious jokes per minute and a perfect mix of surrealism, wit, parody and inspired physical gags,"Empire magazine wrote earlier this year. "It has inspired approximately a billion quotes and homages in the 30 years since it first hit screens and still hasn't ever been equaled by its many, many imitators."

Using critics ratings from Rotten Tomatoes, INSIDER ranked all the TV shows that debuted or dropped new seasons in 2018 shows on Netflix. When the critic ratings were the same, INSIDER used audience ratings to break the ties.

Here are the top Netflix shows of the year.

54. "Insatiable" (season one)

Critics rating: 12%

Critics consensus: "Broad stereotypes, clumsy social commentary, and a failed attempt at 'wokeness' make 'Insatiable' hard to swallow."

53. "13 Reasons Why" (season two)

Critics rating: 27%

Critics consensus: "By deviating from its source material, '13 Reasons Why' can better explore its tenderly crafted characters; unfortunately, in the process, it loses track of what made the show so gripping in the first place."

52. "Arrested Development" (season four, remix)

Critics rating: 27%

Critics consensus: "They've made a huge mistake."

Megan Mullally 2018 emmy awards outfit

  • Megan Mullally recently announced she'd be the host of the 2019 Screen Actor’s Guild Awards.
  • She later Instagrammed and said that no one would dress her.
  • Designer Christian Siriano offered to dress her.
  • He's done this for other stars when they've been faced with this dilemma.

Earlier this week, Megan Mullally was announced as the host of the 2019 Screen Actor’s Guild Awards when they air in January, but so far, she’s struggled to find something to wear. As Mullally pointed out in an Instagram post on December 12, no designers would agree to dress her, but now, Christian Siriano has stepped up to the plate.

yes, i will be hosting!! thanks @sagawards! will i be dressed as a spanish senorita? we don’t know. looks like i will be buying my dress online though, as per my usual, even though there is literally a 100 percent chance that i will be on camera, because I’M HOSTING IT. designers do not send me dresses. i’m online scrolling through the gowns sections of various websites- which i know how to do pretty well at this point- and then i tried to order something from saks fifth avenue and they cancelled my order 😂 oh, the glamor of it all. in other news, hosting this great show honoring amazing actors is going to be cool, and i may get to meet olivia coleman. please send jokes! xx @saks

A post shared by Megan Mullally (@meganomullally) on Dec 13, 2018 at 5:28pm PST on

In Mullally’s post, she wrote that she was shopping online for a gown because she said no designers had sent her any samples

She also mentioned that an order she’d put in to Saks Fifth Avenue had been canceled.

"Looks like I will be buying my dress online though, as per my usual, even though there is literally a 100 percent chance that I will be on camera, because I’M HOSTING IT," Mullally wrote. "Designers do not send me dresses. I’m online scrolling through the gowns sections of various websites — which I know how to do pretty well at this point — and then I tried to order something from Saks Fifth Avenue and they cancelled my order."

But then, on Friday, Siriano reached out to Mullally on Twitter.

"Hey @MeghanMullally would love to dress you anytime any day! Xo," he wrote.

Many celebrities who aren’t sizes 0-2 (the size of a typical couture gown sample) have previously spoken up about having trouble finding a designer to dress them for red carpets

Model Ashley Graham previously said that "no one" would dress her for the 2016 Met Gala. Actress Rachel Bloom said that it was "hard" to get someone to lend her a dress. Actress Dascha Polanco said that publicists have told her in the past that designers didn't have her size.

But when that happens, Siriano is known for offering his services like he did for the "Will & Grace" star. In 2016, he stepped up for Leslie Jones when she said she was having trouble finding a gown for the "Ghostbusters" premiere, and at the 2018 Oscar Awards, he dressed 17 different celebrities, including Amy Adams and Whoopi Goldberg.

Siriano recently spoke about how he had "tripled" his business by expanding his size range.

So far, Mullally has yet to respond to Siriano’s offer publicly. INSIDER reached out to Mullally's representatives and Sak's Fifth Avenue but did not immediately receive a response.

3 great TV shows to watch on Netflix this week

chilling adventures of sabrina holiday midwinters tale

  • Every week, we put together a list of three great shows you should watch on Netflix.
  • This week, we recommend a new holiday episode of Netflix's "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" and the underrated AMC drama, "Halt and Catch Fire."

Need something to binge while you're home for the holidays? We can help.

This month Netflix is a little less crowded than usual because of the holidays, which gives you time to catch up on things you might have missed. And we're here to give you recommendations, because we know how daunting finding something to watch can be.

Every week, we select three shows you should watch on Netflix. We pick shows you can quickly, and some you can just get started on. We mix shows that have recently come onto the streaming service with some old favorites you might have missed.

From "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter's Tale" to "Halt and Catch Fire," here's what we recommend you watch this week:

"Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter's Tale"

chilling adventures of sabrina holiday midwinters tale

"Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" dropped a holiday episode centered on Christmas and the Winter Solstice, which is strange considering the witches on this show worship Satan, but that's alright because it's a good episode that moves the story forward. There is an evil Santa, so it's pretty much everything "CAOS" fans want in a holiday special.

"New Girl"

new girl outfits

Seasons: 6

Episodes: 138

"New Girl" got off to a somewhat rocky start when it first premiered in 2011, relying on Zooey Deschanel's quirky Jess Day using her "manic pixie dream girl" charm to carry the show. But the writers quickly realized that the best comedy and characters were the guys Jess rooms with. It became one of the best comedies on television as it started to embrace its weirdness more and more. You might not finish the series this week, but it's worth revisiting or trying for the first time. It's also a good time to consume Jake Johnson content, since he's fresh off a great opening weekend for "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse."

"Halt and Catch Fire"

Halt and Catch Fire Kerry Bishe Mackenzie Davis boardroom

Seasons: 4

Episodes: 40

When "Halt and Catch Fire" premiered on AMC in 2014, it was unfairly compared to the AMC greats: "Breaking Bad" had just ended, and "Mad Men" was still on the air. The show, which dramatizes the computer boom in the 1980s and eventually moves forward to the early days of the internet, was initially dismissed as a knock-off prestige drama. But it grows into its own with its characters (especially the women) who you will honestly love more than your friends, and it integrates seamless but stark time jumps that other shows have never been able to pull off quite as well.
