8 TV shows nominated for Golden Globes that you should be watching, but probably aren't

the americans

  • The Golden Globes honors the best in TV and movies.
  • While some shows are popular with viewers, some are under the radar.
  • Here's a list of shows you should be watching if you aren't, including "The Americans,""Pose," and "Killing Eve."

The Golden Globe awards acknowledge the greatest in TV and movies, but like the Oscars, they don't always reflect what most people are watching.

And with so many TV shows these days, and plenty of movies, too, you really can't watch everything.  It's nearly impossible to add a new show to your schedule because with so much TV and movies out there, you're always behind on something. But we're here to make that easier, with our suggestions for the eight Globes-nominated shows you probably aren't watching but should be.

The winners will be announced when the Golden Globes airs Sunday, January 6 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on NBC, so there's a little bit of time to catch up on the nominees over the holidays.

Here are the eight Globes-nominated shows you probably aren't watching, but you should be.

"Homecoming" is a stunning psychological thriller.

Nominations: Best television show — drama, best performance by an actress in a television series — drama (Julia Roberts), and best performance by an actor in a television series — drama (Stephan James)

The Amazon drama from "Mr. Robot" creator Sam Esmail is a hypnotizing thriller about Homecoming, an independent program that works with war veterans who have returned with PTSD. Julia Roberts, who plays Homecoming employee Heidi Bergman, captures the paranoia of a woman who can't remember a distinct moment in her life. Stephan James is equally as brilliant in his portrayal of Walter Cruz, a soldier and Heidi's patients. To top it all off, most of the 10 episodes are less than 30 minutes, proving you don't need a full hour to craft a phenomenal story.

"Pose" made history for featuring the largest transgender cast on TV.

Nominations: Best television show — drama and best performance by an actor in a television series — drama (Billy Porter)

"Pose" takes viewers on a captivating journey back to 1987 New York City and explores society in the city — from living on the street to working in Trump Tower. It's a poignant drama that gives viewers a glimpse into ball culture, an underground movement embraced by LGBT people which involves walking and posing among your peers for various titles at balls, which is also featured in the documentary "Paris Is Burning."

"Succession" is a sharp satire.

Nominations: Best performance by an actor in a supporting role in a series, limited series or motion picture made for television (Kieran Culkin)

A drama about the 1% may not seem necessary, but "Succession" nails its sharp satire of the wealthy elite. Focusing on the Roy family, who own a media and entertainment conglomerate, the brilliantly written and acted series doesn't need you to like the family, but you can't help but get sucked in.

RANKED: The 19 Kardashian moments that captured our attention in 2018, in order of shock value

kylie jenner pregnant

You can say plenty of things about the Kardashian-Jenner family (and people do), but one thing you cannot call them is "boring."

2018 was no different. Calabasas' first family gave us scandalous behavior, big reveals, and sensational social media posts that captured the internet's attention for days, weeks, or even months at a time.

INSIDER picked the 19 wildest moments and ranked them in order of shock value.

19. Kim Kardashian West was accused of cultural appropriation after she filmed herself with "Bo Derek braids."

Considering this is far from the first time Kim Kardashian West has been accused of cultural appropriation, the January controversy surrounding her "Bo Derek braids" ranks at the bottom of the family's capacity for shock value.

In fact, Kim went on to sport Fulani braids again on the red carpet at the MTV Movie & TV Awards in June.

After receiving more backlash, she explained that she likes to wear braids because her daughter North likes when they match hairstyles, but didn't exactly apologize.

18. Kendall Jenner discussed her sexuality in an interview that many described as tone-deaf.

Kendall Jenner addressed rumors about her sexuality in an interview for Vogue's April cover story, but not everyone was thrilled with the model's wording.

"I don't think I have a bisexual or gay bone in my body, but I don't know! Who knows?! I'm all down for experience — not against it whatsoever — but I've never been there before," she told Vogue.

The 23-year-old model went on to reference her tomboyish style and "male energy."

"I don't want to say that wrong, because I'm not transgender or anything. But I have a tough energy. I move differently," she said. "But to answer your question: I'm not gay. I have literally nothing to hide. I would never hide something like that."

Many people expressed confusion about Jenner's wording — particularly about her comment that she's "down for experience."Others mocked the article itself as well as Jenner's tone-deaf response, including People reporter Dave Quinn, who sarcastically called her "brave" for "coming out as straight."

17. Kim made a perfume bottle using a mold of her own nude body

People had a lot of thoughts when Kim unveiled the bottle for her fragrance KKW Body in April, which was shaped from a mold of her naked body.

The promotional pictures — especially a full frontal nude photo — naturallydivided the internet as some praised the mom-of-three for embracing her body while others shamed her.

RANKED: The TV reboots and revivals of 2018

$

queer eye season two

  • We took all of the most notable TV reboots and revivals in 2018 and ranked them from worst to best.
  • Some, like Netflix's "Queer Eye," were great, but some, like CBS's "Murphy Brown," were bad.

Reboots and revivals had a big year in 2018, from "Queer Eye" to "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina."

Reboots and revivals are either hit or miss. Even though "Roseanne" was canceled in May after star Roseanne Barr tweeted a racist remark, it premiered in March to over 18 million viewers. Its spin-off, "The Conners," which premiered in October, has been a hit with critics, but the ratings dropped compared to "Roseanne."

Possibly inspired by the ratings success of "Roseanne," CBS attempted a revival of its great comedy "Murphy Brown." But although it tired to make the story and characters relevant to 2018, it fell completely flat and did not get the ratings or reviews comparable to "Roseanne" and "The Conners."

There are many, many more reboots and revivals that debuted this year.

We took all of the most notable reboots and revivals of 2018, and ranked them from worst to best. We've also included the show's Rotten Tomatoes score, both with critics and audiences, when available.

Here are the TV reboots and revivals of 2018, ranked.

15. "Heathers"— Paramount Network

Critic score: 30%

Audience score: 54%

This adaption of the 1988 cult classic was pulled multiple times due to its excessive violence, and it should have stayed that way. It is a terrible show that does not understand the satirical elements that made the movie it's based on work so well that it became an important cultural staple of the decade.

14. "Magnum, P.I."— CBS

Critic score: 55%

Audience score: 45%

"Magnum P.I" was an iconic show that changed the cop show genre and turned Tom Selleck into a major star. Unfortunately, the reboot isn't fresh because it doesn't add anything new to the premise. Though the lead, Jay Hernandez, has a ton of charisma, just like Selleck, and does his best with the bland writing.

Visit INSIDER's homepage for more.

13. "Murphy Brown"— CBS

Critic score: 42%

Audience score: 45%

During its original run, "Murphy Brown" was revolutionary, forward, and provocative, which is why everyone was so excited about a revival in 2018. Unfortunately, while it desperately tries to be the show it was before, it's tiresome, dated, and all in all, a missed opportunity, because this could have been something great if done right.

  • New episodes of "Riverdale" won't air until January 16, 2019.
  • If you're caught up and are looking for something to watch over the holidays, there are plenty of shows to choose from.
  • INSIDER worked with TV Time to come up with some shows "Riverdale" fans may also enjoy based on the percentage of "Riverdale" viewers who also mark these shows on their app.
  • Here are 15 shows "Riverdale" fans also watch,

"Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" (Netflix)

Stream it: Netflix

The "Riverdale" spin-off or companion show is based in the neighboring town of Greendale and follows Sabrina Spellman, also a character from Archie Comics, as she tries to juggle her human life and her witch life. A "Riverdale" character even makes a surprising crossover appearance during one episode of the first season. Oh, and Satan plays a pretty big role on the show.

"Dynasty" (The CW)

Stream it: The CW, Netflix

This reboot of the popular 1980s soap opera centers on the Carrington family, company owners and billionaires. Between the infidelity, kidnappings, and death, "Dynasty" is never boring. Fashion fans can also appreciate the stunning styles featured on the show.

"The End of the F***ing World" (Netflix)

Stream it: Netflix

Dark British comedy "The End of the F***ing World" is seriously bleak but in the best way possible. The premise of two teens deciding to run away together is a simple and basic concept, but the series quickly takes a twist because one of them plans on murdering the other. Watch the series to find out what happens.

9 surprising things you didn't know about 'Top Chef'

Top Chef 16

  • Season 16 of "Top Chef" premiered December 6.
  • In Season 16, "Top Chef" producers wanted to shed light on an "underdog" culinary region, which led them to choose Kentucky.
  • Host Padma Lakshmi once appeared in the cult Mariah Carey film "Glitter."
  • Head judge Tom Colicchio considers "Top Chef: Texas" winner Paul Qui the most talented chef they've ever had on the show.

Every foodie's favorite reality TV show, "Top Chef," premiered its 16th season on December 6. For those of you who can't wait for the return of Padma, Tom, and all the new cheftestants, here's some "Top Chef" trivia to get you up to speed and fully prepped for the new episodes.

Host Padma Lakshmi appeared in the cult Mariah Carey film "Glitter".

Padma Lakshmi has hosted "Top Chef" since its 2nd season, but long before her Bravo kitchen debut, she played a supporting role in the cult-classic, Razzie-winning Mariah Carey film known as "Glitter."

She played Syik, a pop star whose terrible voice is dubbed over by Mariah's character Billie's fabulous singing skills.

All of Lakshmi's dialogue needs to be vetted by the "Top Chef" legal team, so she wears an earpiece during filming.

According to Entertainment Weekly, in a conversation between "Top Chef‘s" Padma Lakshmi and Gail Simmons and renowned chef Eric Ripert, it was revealed that Bravo's legal team insists that Lakshmi wear an earpiece on-air when she describes the challenges, allowing them to hear her dialogue and feed her any necessary corrections.

Lakshmi said she gains between 10 and 17 pounds every season.

As their jobs require them to taste all cheftestant-prepared dishes during filming, it stands to reason that the "Top Chef" judges may put on a bit of weight by the end of the season.

According to Lakshmi, she gains about 10-17 pounds during each run of shooting.

During past seasons, Lakshmi said that she took extreme steps to lose the weight, trying everything from cleanses to draconian fitness regimens. However, she recently told the Hollywood Reporter that she no longer intends to invest significant energy into whittling her figure down in time for the Emmy Awards, citing her young daughter as a source of inspiration.

"This year, I've decided my weight will not be my focus. If I need a bigger dress, so be it. That one day — or any day — on the red carpet isn't nearly as important as making sure my daughter doesn't measure her worth by her dress size," Lakshmi said.

12 times Britney Spears appeared in movies and TV

britney spears jane the virgin

  • Though she's one of the top-selling pop stars of all time, Britney Spears has made plenty of cameo appearances on TV and in movies over the years.
  • She's flexed her comedic chops on many popular sitcoms including "How I Met Your Mother,""Will & Grace,""Jane the Virgin," and "The Simpsons," among others.
  • These are the best Britney Spears cameo appearances.

Though she's one of the most beloved top-selling pop stars of all time, Britney Spears has made plenty of cameo appearances on TV and in movies over the years.

True fans will know that Spears actually got her start on TV, acting in commercials and performing on the singing competition show "Star Search" in 1992. The next year, she got her big break on "The All New Mickey Mouse Club," singing and dancing alongside future A-listers like Christina Aguilera, Keri Russell, Justin Timberlake, and Ryan Gosling.

In her two decades as a music legend, Spears has only taken a starring turn on the big screen once, in 2002's "Crossroads," which was maligned by critics but adored by fans. Though we'll likely never get a sequel to "Crossroads," Spears has made plenty of memorable cameos in popular TV shows like "Will & Grace,""Jane the Virgin," and even "The Simpsons," as well as a few movies.

These are the 12 best cameo appearances the pop queen has made throughout her career.

Spears played a conservative talk show host hiding a major secret on "Will & Grace."

Back in 2006, Spears got a little bit political when she guest starred on the hit NBC comedy's eighth season. She played Amber-Louise, a right-wing talk show host with a big secret: she was a "hardcore lesbian" playing up her ultra-religious views to land major TV success.

This one-episode appearance let Spears flex her comedic chops.

She made a cameo in "Longshot," a made-for-TV movie with a stellar teen pop line-up.

Before she played a seductive flight attendant in "Toxic," she made a brief appearance as an employee of the skies in "Longshot," a 2002 movie that aired on the Disney Channel.

The movie starred fellow teen pop stars including Lance Bass, LFO, O-Town, and even Lil Kim and never quite made it to the big screen."

In 2008, Spears acted in two episodes of "How I Met Your Mother" and again showed off her funny side.

Spears came to Primetime TV again in 2008 when she guest-starred on "How I Met Your Mother," playing Abby, a lovelorn receptionist that has hopelessly fallen for Ted (Josh Radnor) … before she winds up dating Barney (Neil Patrick Harris).

Abby made a return appearance later on in the season, on the hunt for love again.

Some of the original "Beverly Hills, 90210" team may be reuniting soon, as CBS Television Studios is shopping another reboot of the 1990s teen soap franchise.

Actors Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Jason Priestley, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green, and Gabrielle Carteris are said to be on board for the new edition, which will be steered by the showrunners of the previous iteration of the series, CW's "90210," according to Deadline, which first reported the news.

The studio reportedly has early interest from multiple outlets. CBS Television Studios declined to comment.

Shannen Doherty and Luke Perry also starred in the long-running hit. CW revived it for five seasons with a new cast from 2008-2013. The rebooted version saw several original cast members make appearances, including Garth, Doherty, and Tori Spelling.

"90210" also spawned the long-running spinoff "Melrose Place" and short-lived soap "Models Inc."

Sandra Bullock admits she had a crush on her 'Speed' co-star Keanu Reeves, but it wasn't mutual

sandra bullock keanu reeves speed

  • Sandra Bullock appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Friday and revealed the crush that she had on Keanu Reeves while they filmed the 1994 movie "Speed."
  • "I think about how sweet Keanu Reeves is and how handsome he was," the "Bird Box" star said. "It was hard. It was hard for me to really be serious."
  • The actress went on to say that they never dated in real life and joked that "there was something about me, I guess he didn't like."

Sandra Bullock, 54, wasn't immune to Keanu Reeve's good looks while filming their 1994 hit, "Speed!"

The actress, who was 29 at the time of the movie's release, revealed her crush during her appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," which airs on December 20! In light of the movie's 25th anniversary, Sandra did some reminiscing on the '90s action flick … particularly on Keanu's face. "I think about how sweet Keanu Reeves was, and –" here, she lowered her voice to an awe-struck whisper — "how handsome he was." Keanu's charm was so hard to resist, she admitted to host Ellen DeGeneres that it was "hard" for her to be "really serious." Totally relatable, Sandra.

"He would look at me and I'd be like — " here, Sandra emitted a girlish giggle. Ah, we've all been there. But the feelings were unrequited, at least according to Sandra's memory! "Never dated him. I guess there was something about me, I guess he didn't like," Sandra insisted to Ellen, although the daytime host was doubtful about that claim. At least there was one upside to this strictly platonic relationship — watch the rest of the clip below to find out!

Sandra's also throwing it back to her Speed days with her hair makeover! If you haven't already noticed below, the Oscar-winner is back to sporting a bob like she did in 1994 (minus the bangs) after years of sporting long hair. "It's funny. I feel like my hair was there to help me hide. And I hide behind my hair," Sandra admitted to "Today's" Hoda Kotb on December 18. "And when I did cut it, I went, 'Oh, OK, that's me. I can be this person now.' It's all about the hair." And we agree — thanks to her shorter 'do, we could see her sexy shoulders poking out from her $3,752 gown at the premiere for her new film, Bird Box, in New York City on December 18!

Don't pity the actress, as it all worked out. Sandra has been in a loving relationship with photographer Bryan Randall since 2015!

4K TV

  • "4K" is the latest buzzword with TVs.
  • Most advertising would have you think that 4K is akin to the leap we made from standard to high-definition TVs, but that's not totally true.
  • Instead, when you're buying your next TV, there's another feature you should be more focused on: HDR.

First, it's important to understand what 4K really means.

Standard definition (SD), high definition (HD), and 4K (or Ultra HD) refer to a characteristic called resolution, or the number of pixels (or tiny display bits) that make up a display.

A common HDTV has a resolution of 1080p. In simple terms, it's 1,920 x 1,080 pixels: 1,920 pixels going across the display horizontally, and 1,080 pixels going across it vertically.

  • TV is not without its controversies — and definitely not without its casting controversies.
  • Some of the biggest casting controversies in recent entertainment history include Ruby Rose as Batwoman and Joseph Fiennes as Michael Jackson.
  • Cartoons have gotten into trouble, too, including "The Simpsons" with its portrayal of Indian character Apu, played by Hank Azaria.

We're living in an era of peak television. There have never been so many high-quality shows to choose from.

With this high volume of programs, however, there's even more potential for controversial creative choices on the part of TV makers.

We've picked 10 recent casting decisions that created headlines. Keep scrolling to see our picks.

When Matt Smith was cast as the 11th Doctor in "Doctor Who," many fans were left unsure if the young actor could do the role justice.

The story of Doctor Who, an alien who can travel anywhere in space and time with the help of his trusty sidekicks, has been around in some fashion since the '60s. The show was revived in 2005 after a decade-long hiatus starring Christopher Eccleston as the titular doctor. He lasted a season, and the role was taken over by David Tennant for three seasons.

Enter Matt Smith, the then-unknown actor who prompted many headlines with some variation on the phrase "Doctor Who?" Plus, he was only 26, making him the youngest Doctor ever, and that despite the character being hundreds of years old. Fans were wary of someone that age being able to accurately capture the decades-long struggles that the Doctor has had to go through.

According to The Scotsman, the message boards were on fire when the news was announced back in 2009. "Who can take this guy seriously in an Earth-shattering crisis? I couldn't — it would be a joke," wrote one angry fan.

But the backlash to Smith was only the beginning of fan reactions to the show's castings ...

When Jodie Whittaker was cast as the first female Doctor Who, fans threatened to boycott the show altogether.

For years, fans have been asking when the torch would be passed to a female Doctor. They got their wish when Whittaker was announced as the 13th Doctor in July 2017, succeeding Peter Capaldi.

While there was a lot of positivity around the show's choice of Whittaker, many were outraged that this immortal, time-traveling alien could switch genders. Reactions ranged from "The doctor is a time LORD. Not a time LADY," in a since-deleted tweet, to "No disrespect to the actress chosen but the producers have brought my Dr Who history and memories to an abrupt end"on Facebook.

The controversy seems to have helped the show — Whittaker's first season generated the show's best ratings since Matt Smith's first season in 2010.

One of the contestants on Rachel Lindsay's season of "The Bachelorette" allegedly tweeted racist and sexist remarks in the past — and went on to compete for the first black Bachelorette's heart.

When Rachel Lindsay was announced as the first black Bachelorette, people were thrilled that the franchise was taking a step toward diversity. Its shows are notoriously white. But while the season was airing, contestant Lee Garrett's problematic tweets were uncovered.

Garrett allegedly made both racist and sexist tweets on topics like the Pulse nightclub shooting and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The story led to questions about how the show screens potential contestants, and even if producers choose problematic participants on purpose. These questions were further strengthened by the casting of later contestants Garrett Yrigoyen, accused of offensive social media behavior, and Lincoln Adim, convicted of assault.
