Shadowhunters Clary and Jace

As the year flies by, the list of canceled TV shows piles up.

While there's been somewhat of a quiet period since May, some networks are still cutting shows throughout the summer, including USA, which recently canceled two series after three seasons: "Colony" and "Shooter." In June, Freeform canceled the supernatural teen drama, "Shadowhunters."

ABC also canceled the previously renewed "Roseanne" revival in late May, after Roseanne Barr posted a racist tweet about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. However, ABC announced a spin-off called "The Conners" without Barr coming this fall.

Amazon kicked off the year with a slew of cancellations, announcing the end of three quirky comedies, including the Golden Globe nominee "I Love Dick" and the comedian Tig Notaro's semi-autobiographical show, "One Mississippi." It canceled Golden Globe nominee "Mozart in the Jungle" in April, after four seasons, and recently canceled "Transparent," which will end after the upcoming fifth season.

The long-running "The Jerry Springer Show" is ending after 27 seasons and 4,000 episodes. NBC's "Timeless," was also canceled for the second year in a row. NBC reversed its first decision to cancel the show last year after fan outcry. However, fans may have a movie to look forward to that gives the series a proper finale, though no official decision has been made.

We'll update this list as more are announced.

Here are all the shows that have been canceled this year, including those from networks and Netflix:

Everything we know about 'Riverdale' season 3

josie kevin riverdale season two

"Riverdale" has some new surprises in store for season three.

The hit CW drama left Archie's future up-in-the air after he was arrested for a murder he didn't commit, but season three promises a three-month time jump that will put his trial front and center at the beginning of the new season. And though the Black Hood was caught at the end of season two, he's not off the show for good.

With the new episodes comes new romances and the introduction of at least five characters, two of which will be Jughead's sister and mom.

While fans wait in anticipation for the October 10th premiere, here's what we know about season three so far.

There may be a wedding episode.

During a TV Critics Association panel in August, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said there may be a wedding episode that "involves a certain ex-mayor and a certain ex-sheriff." That means Josie's mom, Sierra McCoy, and Kevin's dad, Tom Keller, could be getting hitched after their affair was discovered on the second season.

Casey Cott (Kevin) and Ashleigh Murray (Josie) also told FanSided at San Diego Comic-Con that their families are moving in together.

Kevin and Moose are dating.

After finally kissing at the end of season two, Kevin and Moose are in a relationship. Casey Cott, who plays Kevin, told FanSided that it won't be simple, because Moose is still closeted.

"Kevin, romantically, has a boyfriend who's not quite out of the closet so that's confusing and dark in its own way," he said.

A flashback episode will feature the main teens playing their parents.

At the TV Critics Association panel in August, Aguirre-Sacasa said the fourth episode of the season will be a dark take on "The Breakfast Club." Titled "The Midnight Club," the main teens will play high school versions of their parents.

That results in KJ Apa as Fred Andrews (Luke Perry), Camila Mendes as Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols), Cole Sprouse as FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich), Lili Reinhart as Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick), and Madelaine Petsch as Penelope Blossom (Nathalie Boltt).

The episode will reportedly reveal a secret the parents have all been hiding since their school years.

The season finale of 'Dr. Pimple Popper' featured a lipoma with a scary secret — here's a closer look at the episode

  • In the season finale of "Dr. Pimple Popper," Dr. Sandra Lee treated a woman with a lipoma on her butt — but it's no ordinary lipoma.
  • Tests reveal that the patient, Taylor, has a fat deposit that's inside her spinal cord.
  • It's apparently linked to the bump on her backside, meaning that any removal procedure could be risky.
  • Eventually, Lee successfully removes some of the bump to give Taylor a more "normal" appearance.
  • Warning: This post contains graphic images.

Fans of Dr. Sandra Lee's TLC show "Dr. Pimple Popper" will have to wait patiently for more pops. While the series has officially been renewed for a second season starting in January 2019, the first season came to a close on Wednesday night.

The show's first five episodes diverged from the types of pops that made Lee famous on YouTube. Yes, there were still a few bursting cysts and satisfying lipoma removals, but many patients came to Lee for help with complex, mysterious, totally un-poppable skin conditions.

But the finale showcased Lee's most fascinating case yet: A bump on the butt that seemed like a lipoma but actually signaled a serious health issue.

Here's a closer look at the episode.

The episode starts with Taylor, a 22-year-old with a lump on her backside

dr pimple popper tlc show taylor bump

In an interview filmed at her home, Taylor explains that she's had the lump since she was born, though it grew bigger in her teenage years. It sits almost directly in Taylor's gluteal cleft — the body part more popularly known as the butt crack.

Taylor says a previous doctor told her the lump was a lipoma, or a benign fatty tumor. She had removed it in 2016, but then it grew back. She estimates it's roughly the size of a baseball. Even though she's given it a nickname ("Lizzie the Lipoma") Taylor adds that the lump affects her self-confidence.

"I can't hide it all the time. And every once in a while I'll be in a fitting room and I'll try something on and get so angry," Taylor says in the interview. "I can honestly say I feel defeated."

Lee notices "warning bells" when she examines the bump

dr pimple popper tlc show exam

In an exam room at Lee's office, Taylor says that, despite having surgery to remove it, her lipoma has grown back even larger than it used to be. She also tells Lee that she's had the lump since birth — her mother noticed it when she was a toddler.

Both revelations strike Lee as strange.

"There's two warning bells," Lee tells Taylor. "One is, why did this doctor remove this ... and then it came right back? And then the other big thing for me is, a regular lipoma does not appear at birth. You get that over time. There could be something else going on."

Given the bump's location near the spine, Lee asks whether or not Taylor has had any nervous system issues with the lower half of her body. Taylor says no.

"It's never affected anything like that other than my confidence," she says. "I've never had any problems."

Finally, Lee decides to order an MRI for Taylor and collect some medical records from her previous doctors. She holds off on any type of procedure, however.

"There is no way I can do this procedure today," Lee says. "In fact, I think it would be dangerous if I did this procedure today. You're not born with a lipoma unless there's something else going on."

Tests reveal that Taylor has fat inside her spinal cord

dr pimple popper tlc show taylor MRI

Taylor returns to Lee's office for her MRI results and gets shocking news. Lee explains that there is a deposit of fat inside Taylor's spinal cord — the bundle of nerves that connects the brain to the rest of the body.

In a behind-the-scenes blog post published on her website The Pretty Pimple, Lee offered a more detailed explanation of the condition. She wrote:

"It was confirmed by the radiologist that this is a lipomeningocele. That's a fancy word for what is basically a little tiny strip of a lipoma inside her spinal canal. It's actually creating a tethered cord, meaning Taylor's spinal cord ... is being pushed to the side by this lipoma and is now stuck to the side of her spinal canal. The radiologist said it was an absolute miracle that she wasn’t showing any negative signs because of this… damage to your spinal cord in this area can create bowel and bladder problems, nerve function, even difficulty in walking… and all that could be permanent!"

Screen Shot 2018 08 15 at 3.08.47 PM

On her blog, Lee also noted that Taylor's bump is a possible marker of spinal dysraphism. That's an umbrella term for different conditions in which the spine forms abnormally during an embyo's developmentaccording to the Spine Hospital at the Neurological Institute of New York.

Lee wrote that she's never seen a growth like this on an adult before because they're usually diagnosed when patients are very young.

"Hands down, without a doubt, this is something that should have really been caught by other doctors, well before Taylor saw me," Lee wrote.

In the episode, it's not made totally clear whether fat deposit inside Taylor's spine is actually connected to the bump on her butt — but that seems to be the implication.

When Lee offers to remove some of the tissue on the bump to make it more aesthetically pleasing, she warns that the procedure could disrupt Taylor's spinal cord.

"Remember now we know what this [bump] is connected to, and anything that causes trauma in this area could potentially damage your nerves that come out of your spinal cord," Lee says.

Though it's a risky procedure, Lee removes some of the bump.

dr pimple popper tlc show taylor in surgery

After speaking with her father on the phone, Taylor decides to move ahead with the procedure. Lee removes some excess skin and superficial fat with extreme caution.

"Even tugging on this lipoma in any way could potentially disrupt the growth within the spinal cord, and I don't want to do that in any way," Lee says. "By staying as superficial as possible I'm able to shape this well and make sure it looks good without really disrupting it."

When the removal is complete, Lee sews Taylor up with "two to three times" the normal amount of stitches to make sure the incision heals correctly.

And even though the growth isn't totally removed, the difference is noticeable:

Taylor is "ecstatic" with her post-op results

In a follow-up interview, Taylor says she and her parents have decided to see a neurosurgeon to see if it's possible for her lipoma to be completely removed.

But even shrinking its size has impacted her life.

"I'm ecstatic about my results," Taylor says in the interview. "Since my surgery with Dr. Lee I feel more confident. When I lost a part of Lizzie, there was a lot lifted off my shoulders."

11 of the best minor characters on 'The Office'

$
0

jan fired the officeWhen it comes to the golden age of TV, there’s no denying that NBC’s hit "The Office" is one of the most beloved sitcoms of its time.

Since the series finale in 2013, the show has only continued to grow in popularity thanks to reruns in syndication and streaming services making it one of the most binged TV shows around.

With each of the show’s nine seasons, viewers were introduced to tons of interesting characters, and iconic celebrity guest stars, many of whom went on to become series regulars. And while the core Dunder Mifflin crew certainly expanded from the show’s early days, there were plenty of minor characters that made a lasting impression … whether appearing in a few episodes or making repeat appearances across seasons.

Some of them were pretty terrible (like Todd Packer and Deangelo Vickers) but others managed to totally win our hearts. These are the 12 best minor characters from all nine seasons of "The Office," in no particular order.

The Prince family puts up with a lot.

In his time as the head manager of the Scranton branch, Michael does plenty of awful things, both to his employees and to the world at large (Scott’s Tots, anyone?) … but the poor Prince family of competing Prince Paper definitely didn’t deserve his antics.

David Wallace sent Michael to the small company’s office to check things out, and he and Dwight ended up stealing their client list in an effort to destroy the already struggling family business.

When Michael nearly destroys the bumper on his car as he’s attempting to flee, the Prince family sweetly helps him out, and he still puts them out of business. Poor Princes.

Helene Beesly (Pam’s mom) has some funny moments.

Plenty of wonderful women unwittingly fell for Michael’s unique charms only to end up being treated totally terribly by him.

Pam’s mom appears, by all accounts, to be as lovely as her daughter, and briefly dates Michael after her divorce from Pam’s dad, William.

Of course, Pam and Jim aren’t thrilled by this, but they try to show their support by going on a double date with Michael and Helene for her birthday. Michael abruptly dumps her after learning her age, and she’s forced to run into him several times afterward.

Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration was part of a popular running joke.

Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration quickly became a staple on the show, especially since Vance Refrigeration is located in the same building and on the same floor as Dunder Mifflin. He and Phyllis are the unsung couple of "The Office"— after all, who didn’t love his over-the-top Valentine’s Day gestures and the fact that he bid $1,000 for charity to hug his own wife?

He was an all-around nice guy, gifting a mini fridge for the winner of Casino Night and even offering to buy out the warehouse space so that the warehouse employees wouldn’t lose their job if Dunder Mifflin fell victim to a shutdown.

'The Walking Dead' actor says his new season 9 romance was his first on-screen kiss and he was inspired by 'The Office'

jerry walking dead season 9

  • The first trailer for season nine of AMC's "The Walking Dead" teases a relationship for King Ezekiel's guard, Jerry (Cooper Andrews).
  • In an interview with INSIDER, Andrews said it was his first on-screen kiss.
  • He prepped for the role by watching a bunch of TV and movies.
  • He really honed in on "The Office" and tried to channel Jim and Pam's romance after watching a bunch of their scenes.

When AMC's "The Walking Dead" returns this fall, we'll be saying goodbye to Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and hello to at least one budding relationship.

The first trailer for season nine shows fan-favorite Jerry (Cooper Andrews) lock lips with the Kingdom's very own Nabila (Nadine Marissa). That's a little out of character for Jerry who is usually acting as King Ezekiel's bodyguard.

"I was excited about it ... just to know that Jerry isn't just shadowing Ezekiel all the time," Andrews told INSIDER of his relationship with Nabila. "It just kind of proves that this life that we're viewing is more than just trying to survive. It's also my first on-screen kiss."

"I was like, 'I hope I don't suck at this,'" he quickly added.

Andrews said he prepped a lot for the big moment. He used some other shows for inspiration, but there was one favorite he really channeled.

"I was watching all of these TV shows and movies, [thinking] like, 'How do you kiss?' Because I think I do it wrong. I think I do it weird," Andrews said. "I always watch 'The Office.' 'The Office' is now always on for me. I watched enough of Jim and Pam kissing throughout the seasons that I was like, 'OK. I'm gonna try and be like Jim on this.' So that was my best imitation."

jim and pam first kiss

From the trailer, it doesn't look like Andrews' first on-screen kiss. The actor admitted he probably didn't have the mintiest breath on the day of filming.

nabila jerry walking dead season 9

"I think on the day I was just eating ground beef and onion and she [Marissa] was drinking black coffee. We didn't think about it. Whoops!" said Andrews.

Andrews doesn't look like he'll be the only survivor finding love in the apocalypse during season nine. A close watch of the trailer shows Ezekiel getting pretty cozy with Carol (Melissa McBride).

The "Walking Dead" season 8 Blu-ray and DVD is available August 21. The show will return to AMC October 7 at 9 p.m.

'Black-ish' creator Kenya Barris signs $100 million deal with Netflix

kenya barris

  • "Black-ish" creator Kenya Barris has signed a multi-year production deal with Netflix worth roughly $100 million, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told Variety.
  • Barris' reported deal puts the producer in the same realm as Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy, who have previously signed eight-figure deals with the streaming service.

Kenya Barris has become the newest big-ticket addition to Netflix’s lineup of television producers.

The “Black-ish” creator has signed a multi-year overall deal with the streaming service that will see him produce series exclusively for Netflix. According to a source with knowledge of the negotiations, the deal is valued at roughly $100 million — putting Barris in the same ballpark as recent Netflix recruits Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy.

Barris’ departure from ABC Studios, where he was under an overall deal, became official last month. But according to insiders, his release from his ABC deal had been secured several months ago, and the basics of his new Netflix agreement had also been in place for some time.

Barris’ relationship with ABC began to show signs of strain in March when Varietyreported that the network had indefinitely shelved an episode of “Black-ish” that he wrote and directed, titled “Please, Baby, Please,” which touched on current events, including controversy over athletes kneeling during performances of the national anthem. Barris told Variety at the time, “Given our creative differences, neither ABC nor I were happy with the direction of the episode and mutually agreed not to air it.”

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Disney-owned ABC’s concerns with the episode were related to comments that characters made in the episode about President Donald Trump, not to the football storyline.

A month later, reports surfaced that Barris was being courted by Netflix for an overall deal. But his ability to pursue a Netflix deal was complicated by the renewal of his ABC agreement that he signed last year, and which ran through 2021. Barris had to secure an exit from ABC before moving to Netflix.

With his departure from ABC Studios last month, Barris stepped away from his post as co-showrunner of “Black-ish,” but will continue to serve as executive producer. Barris also has “Black-ish” spinoff “Grown-ish” at Disney cable channel Freeform, where he will continue to be an EP.

“Black-ish” has been a rarity among broadcast comedies in recent years — drawing solid ratings and robust critical praise, particularly for episodes addressing complex social issues. It also, when it premiered in 2014, was the first broadcast comedy in years to feature an African-American family. It has been nominated for 12 Primetime Emmy Awards over its run, and this year received its third Emmy nomination for outstanding comedy series. It received a Peabody Award in 2016, and a Golden Globe Award in 2017 for actress Tracee Ellis Ross.

“Kenya Barris is one of our great modern storytellers,” said Cindy Holland, vice president, original content at Netflix. “Kenya uses his voice to make audiences more aware of the world around them, while simultaneously making them laugh. His honesty, comedic brilliance and singular point of view, combined with the creative freedom he will enjoy at Netflix, promises to create powerful new stories for all our members around the world.”

Barris added, “When my agents reached out to me about this little garage start-up called Netflix, I wasn’t sure what to think. But after I talked to Ted and Cindy, I started to believe that maybe this mom-and-pop shop with only 130 million subscribers might just be something… so I decided to take a swing… a leap of faith if you will, and take a chance with the new kids on the block.”

With his new agreement, Barris joins the ranks of television’s highest paid creators. In the last year, Netflix has signed Rhimes and Murphy to nine-figure deals as it continues to grow its original-programming volume in an increasingly robust challenge to the traditional pay-TV business. The streaming service last month revealed an initial programming slate from Rhimes that includes eight new series project.

Traditional media companies have been compelled, in the face of such tactics, to become more aggressive in efforts to retain and recruit writer-producer talent. Greg Berlanti in June signed a six-year deal with Warner Bros. Television worth more than $300 million that saw the studio take an ownership stake in his Greg Berlanti Prods.

'The Walking Dead' actor shares his best guess on what's up with that mysterious helicopter we keep seeing

helicopter rick

  • A mysterious helicopter keeps popping up on "The Walking Dead."
  • It appeared again on the season nine trailer for the show.
  • Cooper Andrews, who plays Jerry on the show, told INSIDER he doesn't think Jerry would put too much thought into the chopper.
  • But Andrews says as a fan, he wants to know more about them and thinks it could be from another group.

AMC's "The Walking Dead" has left a few big mysteries up in the air, literally. While we're still waiting for word on Heath's disappearance on season six, the show also introduced a mysterious helicopter last year.

We haven't learned much more about it since Rick's ominous sighting on the fifth episode of season eight, but it appears Anne has been in correspondence with the people flying the chopper.

The helicopter came up again in the season nine trailer featuring Anne and Cooper Andrews, who plays Ezekiel's guard Jerry, has some thoughts of his own on what he'd do if his character sees it.

"I honestly think that if Jerry saw it, I feel like it would be a low priority," Andrews told INSIDER. "I think that he would try to chase the helicopter. Because in his mind I think ... we'd need to find where that's coming from. I think Jerry is more focused on what he can control and what he can handle."

walkling dead jerry season 813

Jerry's main job on the show has been to stay with Ezekiel and protect the Kingdom so he may not rush into solving something like the helicopter mystery right away. Plus, we know he has a new relationship with Nabila on season nine.

Read More: 7 theories about the mysterious helicopter that keeps popping up on "The Walking Dead."

While Jerry may be uninterested in the helicopter, Andrews himself definitely wants to know what's going on.

"From a fan side of it, I really want to know where there's a place where they're still getting gas and being able to fly helicopters," said Andrews.

In the trailer for season nine, we see Rick and his crew reverting to using horses and carriages to get around.

the walking dead season 9

Andrews warns that finding the place where the chopper came from may not result in a pretty answer.

"That might work kind of counter," said Andrews. "Someone wherever out there, a group, we don't know what can handle — what can hold a helicopter. So, I just really want to know."

The one person who seems to know more about it is Pollyanna McIntosh, who plays Anne on the series.

Last season, Anne packed a suitcase and looked like she was ready to fly off. McIntosh confirmed to INSIDER in April that Anne made plans to meet with the chopper we saw arrive at the junkyard near the end of season eight.

"She's certainly in touch with people that don't seem to be the people that we know already," McIntosh told us about the helicopter visiting the junkyard. "This seems to be some other situation out there. Is it an extension of the Heapster community? Is it another community? Is it a single person? Is it a group? I don't wanna give too much away."

walking dead jadis helicopter

The season nine trailer also hinted at a few new communities, including the Commonwealth, which appears in the comics. Maybe the helicopter is from them.

The "Walking Dead" season 8 Blu-ray and DVD is available August 21. The show will return to AMC October 7 at 9 p.m. where we'll see Anne interact with the helicopter even more.

26 of Serena van der Woodsen's most iconic outfits on ‘Gossip Girl’

serena gossip girlOn "Gossip Girl," the only thing more interesting than the juicy upper east side gossip is getting a glimpse at what the main characters in the show are wearing. This is especially true when it comes to the show’s two female leads — Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf, played by Blake Lively and Leighton Meester.

Fans of the show know that Serena was a big fan of wearing Herve Leger bandage dresses just to get a cup of coffee.

She loved sequins and a good cut-out dress, owned hundreds of coats, and was rarely seen in a pair of flats. Most importantly, she fully owned every single look she waltzed outside in, even if it was completely inappropriate for the weather or occasion.

There are plenty of great Serena looks that come to mind when thinking about "Gossip Girl." Some were so good they’re hard to forget.

Here are some of Serena van der Woodsen's best looks.

When she made her first appearance in this iconic Grand Central Terminal outfit.

The first time we see Serena in the show, she’s in an outfit that doesn't do justice to her style in later seasons. Still, it’s a good look, and it’s actually attainable.

When she walked through Paris in a cage dress and flats.

This look is classic Serena — she’s pairing something outrageously expensive and glamorous with super-casual items for doing some shopping in Paris. For anyone else, a glittery cage dress paired with Oxford shoes, a blazer, a fedora, and a leopard print bag might look ridiculous, but on Serena, it’s truly amazing.

When she looked like a Grecian goddess at the Hamptons white party.

One of the best Serena looks of all time has to be the one she wore to a Hamptons white party during the summer. She resembles a Grecian goddess with her white gown, mixed gold accents, and elegant updo. This look is a favorite among fans.

Just a warning that this post contains some spoilers.

Mona Vanderwaal outsmarted everyone on "Pretty Little Liars."

The on-and-off friend of Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson) was revealed to be "A" on season two of "Pretty Little Liars." For the rest of the show's run, the viewers are mostly unsure whether or not Vanderwaal is on the side of the Liars, or back on the "A" team.

Perry Wright has a secret revealed in "Big Little Lies."

One of the main love interests in the show, Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård), is a villain in every sense of the word. Viewers slowly see more and more of Wright's behavior – he physically abuses his wife, Celeste (Nicole Kidman), and it's later revealed that he raped Jane Chapman(Shailene Woodley), and is the father of her child, Ziggy.

At the end of the first season, Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz)defends Celeste and Renata Klein (Laura Dern)against Wright, which accidentally leads to pushing him down a flight of stairs, killing him.

  • When Nicki Minaj went on stage to accept the award for best hip hop, she defended 5H member Normani Kordei.

  •  Fans took to Twitter to share their reactions.

Tiffany Haddish threw shade at Fifth Harmony at the 2018 MTV VMAs— and fans went wild.

Haddish was in attendance at the award show on Monday night, which took place at New York City's Radio City Music Hall. Prior to presenting the award for best hip hop, Haddish and "Night School" co-star Kevin Hart managed to sneak in a bunch of jokes, including one in regards to Fifth Harmony and Camila Cabello (who left the group in December 2016).

At the show, Cabello received five nominations for her achievements as a solo aritst. After Haddish botched the pronunciation of the "Havana" singer's name, she said: "For all the fans watching at home, hey Fifth Harmony."

The moment was met with shock from fans, and they took to Twitter to share their reactions.

People also praised VMA winner Nicki Minaj for defending 5H.

Before giving a speech, Minaj showed support for 5H's Normani Kordei, saying: "Don't be coming for Fifth Harmony because Normani is that b----."

Since going solo, Kordei also found success. Her collaboration with Khalid, "Love Lies," peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

What it takes to be a writer for 'Saturday Night Live'

"Hits & Misses" author and former "Saturday Night Live" staff writer Simon Rich walks us through a week of writing for the iconic show. Following is a transcript of the video.

Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!

Simon Rich:"SNL" has been functioning I believe in pretty much exactly the same way since 1975. On Monday, you meet the host. Lorne calls on you one at a time and you say a few ideas. You don't actually have to write those ideas, you're mainly just trying to make everybody laugh. Sort of a colossal waste of time, creatively, but a nice diplomatic thing to sort of say to the host, "Don't worry, we're all pretty funny, you're gonna be okay and not humiliate yourself."

And then you write pretty much until Wednesday morning. Write all day Tuesday, and all night Tuesday. And at Wednesday there's a big table read where the cast and the host read all of the pieces out loud. Sometimes the list will be like 50 sketches. It takes like four or five hours, this read through. The producers, Lorne, and the host, and the head writers, they go back into a room, and they pick the 10 or 12 best ones, the ones that made everybody laugh the most. It's pretty meritocratic, I mean if something works, it's in definitely, all the time. And it doesn't matter if it was written by a first year writer whose name people are forgetting, the sketch goes into the pile.

Thursday, you rewrite these sketches as a group, trying to punch them up and improve them. And Friday and Saturday you're rehearsing, and building sets, and building props, and designing costumes. And then at 8 p.m. on Saturday there's a full dress rehearsal. It's two hours long. Lorne watches the sketches on a little monitor. You sit next to him, he tells you his notes.

The great thing about working for Lorne is that he gives you full creative freedom. He lets you try whatever you want. There aren't heavy notes, but when there is a note, you trust it, because it's backed by, you know, decades and decades of mastery of comedy.

Then they go into another little room, and they cut another half an hour out of the show, based on which sketches performed the worst in front of the audience. So it can be really stressful because you really work hard on your sketches, but there's multiple times at which they could just be cut completely out of the show. Like in sports, you know, if you strike out you just have to kinda try to forget it because next week you have another show to do.

A lot of people assume that "SNL" is like a really competitive, socially toxic environment. That there's like, backstabbing, and rivalries, and feuds. It's really not true. In my experience it is one of the most friendly groups I've ever seen. People were incredibly generous to one another, helping each other out all the time, for zero credit. People like Seth Meyers, and Colin Jost, who were senior writers, were extremely generous with their time, explaining to me stuff which in hindsight was unbelievably basic.

Like I would do things sometimes in my sketches where a character would be like, "All right, here we are at the dentist's office." Because I was like, "We need some exposition about where they are." And they would be like, "You know you could just, like, show a dentist's office. And I was like, "Oh wow, that's a really amazing..."

And I saw that everywhere I went, every year when the new writers came in, because it was mostly people who have never written for television before. Stand-up comedians, or people who have written funny articles for magazines, or he hires like, playwrights, or people who've done some web videos. He almost never hires somebody who's written for another actual television show. So you have all these novices coming in. The more experienced writers are so nice, and they really teach them. And so I'm super grateful for the experience, because it was fun, but also I learned almost everything I know at that show.

21 surprising things you never knew about 'The Hills'

$
0
0

The HillsEven though "The Hills" ended in 2010 after six seasons, fans have consistently been begging MTV to bring it back. And it seems they’ve heard the calls, because a reboot is in the works, titled "The Hills: New Beginnings," and it will debut on its original home network sometime in 2019.

Though the reboot will reportedly not feature stars like Lauren Conrad, Kristin Cavallari, or Lauren "Lo" Bosworth, plenty of other series regulars are on board, including Heidi and Spencer Pratt, Audrina Patridge, Jason Wahler, Justin ‘Bobby’ Brescia, Stephanie Pratt, and Frankie Delgado.

Until we patiently wait to see what "The Hills" 2.0 has in store, let’s take a look back at the most surprising things you never knew about the series, from how much money they really made to that infamous single solitary mascara tear.

Lauren Conrad was reportedly paid the most, but the lines between perceived and actual wealth were blurry.

Though in their early twenties with sporadic employment records, the cast was frequently seen in luxe nightclubs and designer duds. In 2016, Heidi Pratt told BuzzFeed, "MTV wanted to downplay our lifestyles and pretend we weren't getting the checks that we actually were, so I think that was the blurry line between the lives we were really living and the lives that they wanted us to live."

She added, "Cast members did all make different salaries, so we wanted to do like ‘Jersey Shore’ and unite together and all get a bigger paycheck, but everyone was a little bit too divided. … I mean, obviously Lauren got paid the most — it was her show."

Pratt said she has no idea what happened to the love interests from the first season, Brian and Jordan.

Before meeting her now-husband, Pratt dated Jordan, who seemed nice enough and even gifted her an adorable puppy for Christmas. Of her former flame, she told BuzzFeed, "I don't know what happened to Brian and Jordan, honestly. The dog that I was given on ‘The Hills’ for Christmas is with my best friend's family, and Bella lives the most posh, luxurious life in this mansion by the pool. I think Bella has a better life than even I do now."

But she didn’t really work for Bolthouse Productions.

Lots of plot lines from "The Hills" were manufactured for on-screen drama, and Pratt’s season one promotion from her hardworking colleague Elodie was one of them. She shared, "I definitely did not get the promotion over Elodie! She really worked there and I pretend worked there, so it was obviously a pretend promotion for her to be upset about. That whole plot was scripted."
