Netflix's content boss listed 5 big upcoming Netflix originals you should be excited for

brightNetflix is spending billions of dollars a year on original programming, and will churn out dozens of TV series and a whopping 80 movies in 2018.

But with new Netflix originals cropping up every week, which are worth your time to watch? One way to find out is to simply ask Netflix's content boss, Ted Sarandos.

At the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York last week, Sarandos was asked to list a few big Netflix releases that subscribers should get excited for in the next year.

Sarandos listed five originals to keep an eye out for. The first one to come out will be "Bright" starring Will Smith (December 22), which Sarandos described as Netflix's "first big original film" and a studio-level theatrical tentpole.

"Bright" is a cop thriller set in a world that's similar to ours in time period but contains fantasy creatures like orcs and elves.

Here are the five Netflix originals Sarandos said you should be excited for in 2018:

"Bright"— December 22, 2017

In "Bright," a human LAPD officer (Will Smith) and his orc partner (Joel Edgerton) "stumble on a powerful object and become embroiled in a prophesied turf war," according to Netflix's description of the show.

The film is directed by David Ayers ("Suicide Squad"), and its script was written by Max Landis ("Chronicle").

The budget for "Bright" has been reported to be $90 million.

"Altered Carbon"— February 2, 2018

"Altered Carbon" is a Netflix original TV adaptation of Richard K. Morgan's acclaimed 2oo2 sci-fi novel, "Carbon." The series is set to premiere its first 10-episode season in February.

As Entertainment Weekly notes, "Carbon" takes place 300 years in the future, where human consciousness is stored on digital implants, and technological advances allow the uber-rich to continually upgrade their bodies in an effort to live forever.

The drama series was reportedly a passion project for its creator, Laeta Kalogridis, who optioned the novel "Carbon" shortly after its release 15 years ago. The pilot episode of the series was directed by Miguel Sapochnik, who won an Emmy for directing the "Game of Thrones" episode "Battle of the Bastards" in 2016.

Netflix released a cryptic teaser trailer for the show last week.

"Lost In Space" (Reboot) — May 2018

In 2016, Netflix ordered a 10-episode, modernized reboot of the cult-classic CBS series, "Lost In Space"— a comedy-drama which followed the exploits of the Robinson family as they dealt with being stranded on an alien planet.

Cindy Holland, Netflix's VP of original content, described the Netflix series with the following statement to Deadline when it was first announced:

"The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience. The current creative team's reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world."

In January, one of the remake's stars, Toby Stephens, described the Netflix show as "a lot more modern" take on the 1960s series. Stephens added that the remake has attempted to retain the "humor and humanity" of the original.

"Lost in Space"concluded production in June 2017 and is set for a May 2018 release.

Larry King 'unequivocally' denies groping allegation

Larry King

  • Larry King denied a groping allegation made against him by Terry Richard, the ex-wife of singer Eddie Fisher, to The Daily Mail.
  • Richard told the outlet that King groped her on two occasions, in 2005 and 2006.
  • King denied the allegations as "unequivocally false and defamatory" in a statement sent from his lawyers to the Mail.

Larry King has denied a groping allegation made against him by Terry Richard, the ex-wife of singer Eddie Fisher.

On Monday, Richard, who was married to the late singer Eddie Fisher from 1975 to 1976, told The Daily Mail that the former CNN host groped her once in 2005 and again in 2006, with both alleged incidents occurring at a photo shoot for a baseball awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

The Daily Mail reported that Richard "said in the first incident, while posing together for a photo, King slid his hand down her backless dress and rested his fingers in between her butt cheeks." Regarding the second incident, the outlet reported, "Richard claims the second time was also while they were taking a photo together, and King, now 84, squeezed her butt so hard that it left a large bruise."

Richard told the outlet, "Larry King is a groper. He groped me twice. He gets a thrill doing this in front of the camera, knowing I couldn't do anything."

Days before the outlet published Richard's account, an attorney for King sent a denial statement to The Daily Mail,  in which King's lawyers called Richard's allegations "unequivocally false and defamatory."

The statement, which has since been obtained in full by People, reads as follows:

"We represent Larry King. I am informed that you intend to publish a statement by a woman named Terry Richards that, 10 or more years ago, Mr. King supposedly 'groped' her at one or more baseball dinners. That assertion is entirely and unequivocally false and defamatory. Mr. King did no such thing then or ever. Your publishing this false and defamatory statement will be actionable and highly damaging."

King's lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.

The 13 best new TV characters of the year — from Offred to Celeste Wright

big little lies hbo

  • This year saw an amazing number of interesting new female characters on TV.
  • We listed the 13 best new TV characters of 2017.

Women dominated television in 2017.

From "The Handmaid's Tale" to "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," female-driven shows delivered some of the best new characters and television performances of the year — and they have the Golden Globe nominations to prove it.

This year also saw some stellar new male characters as well, like Reggie Green (Marque Richardson) on "Dear White People," and Courtney Rose (Brandon Micheal Hall) on "The Mayor."

But the richly developed female characters seen on television this year, like Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie) on "Glow," and Offred (Elisabeth Moss) on "The Handmaid's Tale," have shown that this year's best new characters on television were predominantly women.

Here are the 13 best new TV characters of the year, ranked:

SEE ALSO: Here are all the nominees for the 2018 Golden Globes

13. Josh Futturman, "Future Man"

Janitor Josh Futturman (Josh Hutcherson) finds little solace in life other than his favorite video game, "Biotic Wars."

When Josh beats the game — known for being unbeatable — two rebel soldiers (Wolf and Tiger) from the future try to recruit him as a soldier to help them fight in the actual Biotic Wars.

Josh is an unlikely hero, who consistently fumbles and messes up the missions he sets out on with Wolf and Tiger. Despite his ineptitude as a soldier in the Biotic Wars, Josh remains the heart of the show, and one of the biggest reasons why this amusing new Hulu series is worth watching.

12. Pete, "Crashing"

In comedian Pete Holmes' new HBO series, "Crashing," he plays a thinly veiled version of himself (also named Pete), trying to make his way as a fledgling comic.

After his marriage ruptures due to his fascination with comedy, Pete ends up couch surfing, and crashing with different comics, as he tries to gain some traction in the comedy world.

Holmes is as endearingly sweet, goofy, and earnest in his series as he is in his stand-up sets, and his portrayal of, well ... himself, provides interesting insights into comedy, heartache, and ambition.

11. Courtney Rose, "The Mayor"

When Courtney Rose (Brandon Micheal Hall) runs for mayor of his hometown of Fort Grey, California as a publicity stunt to boost his hip-hop career, he accidentally ends up getting himself elected.

Though Courtney only hoped to draw attention to his musical endeavors, he decides to follow through with his original (albeit phony) mayoral promises and tries to reform Fort Grey in this light-hearted series.

The 15 most disappointing TV shows of 2017

doubt cbs

Every year, we get really excited about new shows and more seasons of the shows we loved. And while a few live up to our hopes, too many leave us really disappointed.

We're definitely thankful for the shows that delivered on their promise, such as "Game of Thrones,""Master of None,""Star Trek: Discovery," and "The Crown." But there were lots of shows that weren't as successful.

Here are the most disappointing shows of 2017.

"24: Legacy" (Fox)

With a similar "real-time" countdown to Kiefer Sutherland's hit drama "24,""Legacy" had a lot going for it: all the original producers and many of the stars returned, an already established name and fan base, and a diverse lead in "Straight Outta Compton" star Corey Hawkins. So how did they fudge that up?

The show suffered from a stalled storyline and ratings too low to account for such an expensive production. Fox canceled it in June, though the network still thinks the "24" franchise has some juice in it. We'll have to see if Sutherland will be part of any of that.

"Doubt" (CBS)

Katherine Heigl returned to TV as a defense attorney at a boutique law firm who begins to fall in love with her wealthy client. Its cast also included the talented actors Laverne Cox and Dule Hill and was created by the producers behind "Grey's Anatomy" and "Madam Secretary."

It should have been good, but whoa it was not. Viewers never showed up and it was canceled after just two episodes.

"Emerald City" (NBC)

Fans of the original movie "Wizard of Oz" and the rich universe of Oz books from L. Frank Baum might have shot a little side eye at NBC's dystopian take. That's fair.

The basic tenets of the story are all there, but it had a diverse cast, a much more epic scope, and takes place in a violent period for the magical land. Plus, director Tarsem Singh Dhandwar ("Mirror Mirror,""The Cell") served as an executive producer and directed the series.

It soon became clear that while NBC had a beautiful show on its hands, it didn't have much of a storytelling engine. It lost nearly 30% of its audience after the two-hour premiere in January. It was then canceled by NBC.

Netflix has fired an executive who reportedly claimed not to believe Danny Masterson's rape accusers

Danny Masterson

  • Netflix has fired an executive who reportedly told one of Danny Masterson's rape accusers that Netflix did not believe the allegations of sexual assault made against "The Ranch" star.
  • Andy Yeatman, the ousted executive, was previously Netflix's director of kids and family content.
  • Yeatman's firing follows a Huffington Post report earlier this month that detailed how one of Masterson's rape accusers confronted Yeatman over Netflix's inaction regarding the Masterson allegations.
  • Masterson was fired from Netflix's "The Ranch" last week.

Netflix executive has been fired for comments he made in connection with the streaming service’s investigation of rape claims against actor Danny Masterson.

Andy Yeatman, previously Netflix's director of kids and family content, reportedly told a woman earlier this month that Netflix did not believe the allegations of sexual assault from multiple women against Masterson, a former star of the Netflix comedy “The Ranch.”

The encounter between Yeatman and an unidentified woman was reported in detail earlier this month by the Huffington Post. Yeatman reportedly was coaching a youth soccer game in Los Angeles on a weekend when he was approached by a woman he didn’t know who asked him about the Masterson situation. Masterson was fired from the show on Dec. 5 amid the outcry over Netflix’s inaction despite the multiple assault allegations.

After a brief discussion, the woman told Yeatman she was one of four Masterson accusers whose complaints have sparked an investigation by Los Angeles County authorities. Netflix in a statement issued earlier this month called Yeatman’s comments “careless” and “uninformed” but it also noted that Yeatman had no involvement with “The Ranch” or Netflix’s investigation.

“Mr. Yeatman is no longer employed at Netflix,” a company spokeswoman said Tuesday evening.

Yeatman had been Netflix’s longtime head of kidvid programming. He spoke about the streaming service’s ambitious expansion plans in October during a keynote address at the Mipcom convention in Cannes. Yeatman joined Netflix in 2011 from Disney.

Yeatman could not immediately be reached for comment.

Behind the scenes with Shepard Smith — the Fox News star who's not afraid to take on Trump

$

We spent a very busy news day behind the scenes with Shepard Smith, the Fox News Channel anchor who has been with the company since its inception in 1996. Smith, 53, hosts the network's 3 PM hour, during which he reports from the Fox News Deck, a $10 million dollar, state-of-the-art set and news gathering area.

According to Nielsen, "Shepard Smith Reporting" is, during 2017 so far, the highest-rated cable news program in its time slot, averaging 1.5 million viewers every day.

Unlike opinion-driven Fox News shows like "Hannity" and "Justice w/ Judge Jeanine," Smith specializes in reporting the facts, and he calls on Fox News' roster of correspondents in the field and in-house reporters to cover breaking news stories, sans opinion.

On the day we caught up with Smith, he and his editorial staff feverishly juggled the myriad major stories all contending to be featured during the show's opening segment. We got an inside look at how the show comes together, and we also asked Smith about what makes him unique when compared to other talent at Fox News. We also asked about how he hasn't been afraid to take Trump to task for saying what Smith calls "untrue things." Following is a transcript of the video.

Shepard Smith: I've been doing this for 30 years. I've never been in a news cycle like this where it just – it just keeps coming. We have four lead stories today. They could all be a lead. Al Franken now has – it was 10 senators. Within the last hour, it's now 24 senators who are calling for him to resign. Roy Moore – the president has endorsed now three times. And Southern California is burning.

John Glenn: The news cycle is on speed these days. Every few hours, there's a new lead, and you can see today, you know, we have 34 minutes to air. There's a good chance it will change again. I mean, I haven't looked at my phone in two minutes, so it might have already changed.

Smith: As of right now, we lead with the president's decision to move the embassy of the United States to Jerusalem in Israel.

[Smith has worked for Fox News since it started in 1996]

Smith: I was here a year before the channel actually started, so I've been here 22 years. Everything has changed in our business. When I came here, I had a pager. Now, it's just a cacophony of news-noise and an avalanche of information. And learning to deal with it has been the biggest change in my life.

Whenever I'm not speaking (to reporters), I'll listen to what they're saying while looking for updates in everything else that we're covering. Over time, you just learn to listen and type and read all at the same time, but the main thing is being up to date on what's happening. If you get behind in today's news cycle, you will never catch up.

Smith [From February 16, 2017 broadcast]: Continuing coverage of the president's news conference that happened earlier this afternoon and, you know, it's sort of our job to let you know when things are said that aren't true. This president keeps telling untrue things, and he does it every single time he's in front of a microphone.

Smith [from interview]: If someone were to stand up and say 2 +2 = 6, it's beholden on me to correct that, because it isn't 6. It's 4. A lot of our audience is a right wing audience. They're a conservative audience. They're a traditional audience, but it's not as if they don't understand that sometimes the facts aren't on your side. There is an enormous audience out there that won't believe that. Those in the far right and far left, because – so often, the facts fly in the face of your own worldview.

Sometimes, your side is wrong. I'm here to give the facts, and I don't really care what you think.

'Riverdale' fans finally know who the Black Hood is — and it's an unsatisfying ending

killer riverdale

Warning: Spoilers ahead for season two, episode nine of "Riverdale," titled "Silent Night, Deadly Night."

After multiple deaths and bloody attacks at the hands of the Black Hood, "Riverdale" has finally revealed the mysterious murderer's identity, and we are unimpressed.

During the mid-season finale of the CW teen drama, Archie and Betty discover that the masked man is none other than the high school custodian, Mr. Svenson. This comes as a surprise after Archie's firm denial that it was the janitor during last week's episode, despite Veronica's suspicions.

But after so much tension, Mr. Svenson is an unsatisfying choice for the killer.

Some fans suspect he may not actually be the Black Hood.

Here's why Svenson doesn't feel like the right killer.

His story builds up in such a short span of time.

mr svenson riverdale

Mr. Svenson is first introduced on episode seven, meaning fans had no idea to suspect him until then. In the span of just three episodes, we get his entire devastating life story.

On episode eight, Veronica and Archie learn that Svenson's real name is Joseph Conway and he is the only surviving member of an entire family that was murdered by a random man now known as the "Riverdale Reaper."

They confront Svenson about his old identity and he runs away. Upon cornering him again, he reveals that he saw who killed his family and that the murderer was killed by a group of Riverdale citizens.

Aside from this story, Svenson's only other appearances include talking to Josie in the music room, taking Chuck to the principal's office, and creepily entering the girl's locker room when Josie and Cheryl are in there.

We wanted more from this psycho.

All the details don't add up.

riverdale mr svenson

Everything about Svenson is a red herring intended to keep people from guessing the truth. And while it may have worked, it makes clues worthless, and that's no fun.

One of the major plot points this season is Archie's obsession with the killer's striking green eyes.

When he and Veronica are confronting Svenson about possibly being the Black Hood, Archie ignores Veronica's instincts and says it can't be Svenson because the eyes aren't the same.

After Svenson is killed and Archie, Veronica, Betty, and Jughead are catching up at Pop's Diner, Archie says, "I didn't see it in his eyes."

Clearly, because this would have ended last week if he had.

But then the whole eye thing is just dropped with no explanation as to why. Maybe in the stress of it all, Archie's mind warped the eye color, but we still wanted something more. Or maybe Svenson isn't actually the Black Hood.

Also, how does he know what Fred Andrews' sins are? He works at the high school and Fred owns a construction site.

We need more details and a firmer conclusion.

His ties to Betty are weak.

betty black hood riverdale

Over the course of the season, Betty is called by the Black Hood multiple times, threatened with the potential murders of her boyfriend and her sister, and most recently sent a decaying thumb. But why did Mr. Svenson have a unique obsession with Betty's life? Apparently because of her grandfather.

As young Joseph Conway, Svenson lived at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy. Betty and Archie go to investigate and learn that Svenson blamed the wrong man for killing his entire family. The group who ended up doing the revenge killing for Svenson's family included Betty's grandfather.

So the only tie between the two is that Svenson's blame led to Betty's grandfather murdering an innocent man. But then why does he blame Betty for it?

In the diner, Betty says maybe Svenson's backward thinking of attacking sinners to atone for his mistakes made him do it, but attacking Betty for it makes no sense.

Early fan theories thought maybe Sheriff Keller or Hal Cooper could have been involved, and even these would have been more exciting — and made more sense — than having a new character terrorize the town. But with the Black Hood now dead, this leaves an unknown threat for the second half of season two. Or maybe we'll discover that Svenson wasn't exactly the Black Hood. In any case, it's time for some theories on who the next "big bad" will be.

"Riverdale" will return January 17.

Wednesday's episode of "Riverdale" was the last for the year, and there's a lot to think about.

The episode title, "Silent Night, Deadly Night," pulls its name from a slasher flick of the same name.

"Silent Night, Deadly Night" came out in 1984 and centers on a young kid whose parents were killed by a man dressed in a Santa suit. When he gets older, he has a breakdown and goes on a killing spree dressed as Santa. Putting the Black Hood in a Santa suit is a great homage.

Betty's dream with the Black Hood Santa directly pulls from "Twin Peaks."

In her dream, the Santa creepily crawls over the couch and heads directly for the camera. On an episode of "Twin Peaks," the killer, Bob, crawls over the couch the same way and goes into the camera in what is one of the most subtly terrifying moments on the show.

"Riverdale" has been frequently compared to "Twin Peaks" by fans and critics.

'Apprentice' star Omarosa is leaving her job with the Trump administration — and people are throwing so much shade at her

  • Omarosa Manigault became famous for being a villain on Donald Trump's "The Apprentice."
  • She joined his administration as a communications director in charge of special outreach.
  • On Wednesday, she reportedly resigned from her position (or she was fired, according to some reports).
  • People on social media and traditional media had a field day with the news.

Omarosa Manigault's departure from Donald Trump's White House communications teams has been the subject of much humor online and among the media.

The official story is that Omarosa (who's known by just her first name) resigned from her post as the director of communications for the White House's Office of Public Liaison — a position that itself had people wondering about what she actually did.

But New York Times reporter Yamiche Alcindor said sources told her that Manigault was fired and escorted off White House grounds on Wednesday. The Secret Service said that it didn't escort her from the grounds, but did deactivate her pass, despite the fact that she's not officially leaving her job until next month.

And Trump sent her a nice going away note on Twitter.

Social media went nuts with hilarious reactions to the news:

It wasn't just people on social media who were dragging Omarosa.

This CNN guest rejoiced openly about the news. She called it being "petty for a minute." This Twitter user called it "gold."

The reality star broke her silence about the end of her employment with Trump on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Thursday. During the interview, she said there "were a lot of things that I observed during the last year that I was very unhappy with." Though she remained vague on what those things are, she kept saying that she would tell her story at some point.

Later, "GMA" co-anchor Robin Roberts threw some shade, giving Omarosa the famous dismissal, "Bye, Felicia."

"She said she has a story to tell and I'm sure she'll be selling that story," Roberts said. "She will. Bye, Felicia."

On Thursday afternoon, Omarosa reacted to Roberts.

"That was petty," she told Inside Edition. "It’s a black woman civil war."

And the women of ABC's "The View"got their own digs in. After discussing the various reports around Omarosa's exit from the White House, co-host Whoopi Goldberg had some choice words for Omarosa.

"I hope you find something to do, O. I do," she said. "I hope that you find your people, because maybe they're looking for you. She's just been so nasty to so many women and so many women of color."

Rupert Murdoch calls allegations of sexual misconduct at Fox News 'largely political'

Rupert Murdoch

  • Rupert Murdoch called the series of sexual harassment allegations made against men at Fox News "largely political" in a recent interview.
  • Several prominent Fox News employees were ousted in recent years over sexual misconduct allegations, including former CEO Roger Ailes, and hosts Bill O'Reilly and Eric Bolling.

In an interview about the Disney-Fox deal with Sky News on Thursday, media mogul Rupert Murdoch called the series of sexual harassment allegations at Fox News in recent years "largely political."

Several high-profile men at Fox News were ousted in the past two years after sexual misconduct allegations, including former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes, and hosts Bill O'Reilly and Eric Bolling.

"That's all nonsense," Murdoch said, when asked whether sexual harassment allegations had harmed Fox News. "There was a problem with our chief executive, sort of, over the years, outside incidents. Soon as we investigated it, it was out of the place in hours. Well, three or four days. And there's been nothing else since then."

"But that was largely political, because we're conservative," Murdoch continued. "Now, of course, all the liberals are going down the drain. NBC is in deep trouble. CBS, their stars."

Murdoch, who currently is executive co-chairman of 21st Century Fox, did not go into further detail on NBC and CBS. For context, NBC fired "Today" host Matt Lauer in November after a series of sexual misconduct allegations were made against him; CBS fired Charlie Rose in November over sexual misconduct allegations.

Murdoch's comments on sexual misconduct at Fox News addressed only the allegations Ailes faced. He neglected to mention that O'Reilly and Bolling were also ousted over alleged sexual misconduct.

  • Eminem nearly died from an overdose of the drug methadone in 2007.
  • On his new song, "Arose," he recounts in troubling detail his hospitalization and near-death experience.
  • Listen to the song below.

Eminem nearly died from an overdose of the drug methadone in 2007, as he later recounted to Rolling Stone.

On the poignant song "Arose" off his new album "Revival," the 45-year-old rapper recalls in vivid detail his hospitalization and near-death experience that followed the overdose.

Narrated retrospectively from the perspective of his comatose body, Eminem relays a series of regrets to his children and family, who stand beside his hospital bed as he drifts toward death: "Nurses lean over the bed, pulling tubes out / Then the sheet over my head, shut the room down," he raps.

Eminem previously rapped about his overdose and drug dependency on his "Relapse" song "Déjà Vu" in 2009, but "Arose" goes deeper into his pain and contrition during the incident.

It's an emotional, standout track on a 19-song album that is otherwise worth skipping.

Battlestar Galactica

  • Apple is making a new space series from the "Star Trek" writer and "Battlestar Galactica" developer Ronald D. Moore.
  • It will be Apple's third original series under its new heads of TV programming.

Apple has ordered a new space-themed drama series from Ronald D. Moore, a writer and showrunner famous for his work on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," as well his mid-2000s revival of the "Battlestar Galactica" series, Apple confirmed to Business Insider.

As Deadline first reported, the untitled series "explores what would have happened if the global space race had never ended."It will be written by Moore, along with Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, the co-executive producers of the FX series "Fargo."

The hour-long series will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and Moore's Tall Ship Productions, and executive produced by Maril Davis ("Outlander.")

Apple is steadily making a push into the world of original TV programming, led by former Sony TV presidents Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, whom the company hired in June.

Moore's series is now the third original series to be commissioned by Apple following Erlicht and Van Amburg's hiring. The others are an upcoming Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon-led morning show drama, and a revival of the anthology series "Amazing Stories," which will be produced by Steven Spielberg and Bryan Fuller.

Moore is also the executive producer of the upcoming Amazon original series "Electric Dreams," a sci-fi anthology series based on the works of the author Philip K. Dick.

Tavis Smiley disputes sexual misconduct allegations and suspension: 'PBS made a huge mistake'

tavis smiley

  • Tavis Smiley is defending himself following the suspension of his PBS talk show over allegations of sexual misconduct.
  • PBS suspended "Tavis Smiley" following an investigation that produced "multiple, credible allegations" of misconduct.
  • The allegations included engaging in sexual relationships with multiple subordinates and creating a verbally abusive and threatening environment.
  • Smiley appeared on "Good Morning America" on Monday to reiterate and expand on a defense he first made last week, following his show's suspension.

Talk-show host Tavis Smiley continues to defend himself against the sexual misconduct allegations that resulted in the indefinite suspension of his eponymous PBS show earlier this month.

Smiley appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday, saying that PBS "made a huge mistake" in suspending him from its network.

PBS told Variety last week that it had "engaged an outside law firm to conduct an investigation immediately after learning of troubling allegations regarding Mr. Smiley."The investigation found "multiple, credible allegations" of misconduct that included sexual relationships with multiple subordinates and creating a verbally abusive and threatening environment.

The 53-year-old host immediately defended himself in a video posted to Facebook last week, after the news broke of his show's suspension.

"To be clear, I have never groped, coerced, or exposed myself inappropriately to any workplace colleague in my entire broadcast career, covering 6 networks over 30 years," he said in the video.

Smiley reiterated his defense on "GMA," saying that the relationships he had with subordinates were consensual.

"I celebrate and applaud these women who had the courage to come out," he said. He also expressed concern that, in today's environment, "people end up being guilty simply by accusations."

Smiley went on to deny the accusations that his show had a threatening work environment.

"The environments are intense at times," he said. "I'm not an angry black man and this notion of a hostile environment just doesn't fit."

Following PBS' suspension of his show, Walmart, a previous sponsor of "Tavis Smiley," and an independent book distributor that Smiley worked with both distanced themselves from the host.

Smiley concluded his "GMA" interview by saying, "PBS made a huge mistake here."

"They need to fix it. They need to correct it," he said. "I'm going to do anything to protect my reputation."

A PBS spokesperson responded to Business Insider's request for comment on Smiley's "GMA" interview with the following statement, pointing out inconsistencies in Smiley's statements:

"Tavis Smiley needs to get his story straight.

First, today on Good Morning America, Mr. Smiley acknowledged he has had multiple sexual encounters with his employees, then struggled to recall the number of current employees with whom he has had sex. This contradicts his Facebook post from last week, where he cited only one previous relationship with an employee. Mr. Smiley even told viewers, 'I don’t know where your heart’s going to lead you.' PBS is certain that it should not lead to multiple sexual relationships between the owner of a company and subordinates over many years particularly where employment decisions may be linked to sex.

Second, Mr. Smiley claims he applauds women who have come forward, yet his company requires former and current employees to sign non-disclosure agreements. Witnesses who have bravely come forward to speak with the independent investigators retained by PBS report a fear of retribution for speaking out. PBS stands by its decision to respect the anonymity of those who are afraid to come forward publicly. Additional allegations are continuing to come to light since last week’s announcement.

In contrast, PBS has been consistent: PBS stands by the integrity of its investigation, which has been conducted by an outside firm with expertise in such matters. Mr. Smiley’s own words today coupled with the information discovered during the investigation confirms PBS’ decision to indefinitely suspend the distribution of 'Tavis Smiley.'"
