George R.R. Martin signs autographs baseball Game of Thrones

Over 7,000 fans turned up for a "Game of Thrones" themed baseball game in New York City, and it was every bit as fun as you may think.

The Staten Island Yankees, a minor league baseball team, paired up with "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin to celebrate his work and support the writer's charity of choice, the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary.

There was one hitch: Martin is a loyal Mets fan. In lieu of forcing any Yankees paraphernalia onto the author, the team was renamed the "Staten Island Direwolves" for one night only.

We were on hand to record the historic event.

To get to the game, some fans had to travel on the Staten Island Ferry from Manhattan.

The most hard core enthusiasts arrived at noon to get in line — the stadium doors didn't open until 6pm.

The Richmond County Bank Ballpark boasts a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline in the distance.

George R.R. Martin promised autographs to the first 400 fans in line via his old school Live Journal blog.

These Staten Island locals went to a nearby bookstore before lining up, hoping to be one of the lucky 400 to get a signature on their brand new hardcover copies of "Game of Thrones."
