Mobile ad spending is about to surpass TV this year — and by 2020, all traditional media combined

  • Mobile ad spending in the US will surpass TV ad spending this year.
  • By 2020, it will represent 43% of total ad spending, which is a greater percentage than all traditional media combined.
  • By 2022, it's expected to be more than double that of TV.
  • Digital video is driving this growth.

This year, mobile will surpass TV ad spending by more than $6 billion, according to eMarketer's latest ad spending forecast. By 2020, the channel will represent 43% of total media ad spending in the US—a greater percentage than all traditional media combined.

"Even the strongholds of TV, such as live sports and news, are starting to move online, and people are consuming them on the go through mobile devices," said Martín Utreras, vice president of forecasting at eMarketer. "Audiences continue to abandon traditional media, and ad dollars follow."

242201 US Ad Spending 2020

According to eMarketer estimates, mobile will account for $76.17 billion of US media ad spending in 2018. That's more than TV ($69.87 billion)—and it's significantly more than print ($18.74 billion), radio ($14.41 billion) and out-of-home ($8.08 billion).

By the end of the forecasting period (2022), mobile ad spending is expected to be more than double that of TV. The channel will make up $141.36 billion of US media ad spending, while TV will account for $68.13 billion.

"With respect to TV, content like news and sports are starting to move online," Utreras said. "So we expect to see a shift in dollars for those categories as well.

"At the same time, we increased growth for mobile, as companies like Facebook and Google are still driving double-digit growth. Part of that is driven, of course, by digital video growth coming from platforms like YouTube and Facebook."

17 celebrities you probably didn’t know sang your favorite TV theme songs

0

Screen Shot 2018 09 25 at 10.53.25 AM

A good TV theme song is catchy, fun to watch, and helps to set the tone for the whole show. A bad theme song feels like massive waste of time that leaves viewers desperately wishing a “skip intro” button was always available.

Few things conjure up a sense of nostalgia like a theme song that you know word-for-word. And though you can probably rattle off every line to the theme songs that were popular in your childhood, you may not know who’s responsible for bringing that theme song to life — even if they're super famous.

Keep reading to find out which celebrities sang your favorite TV theme songs:

Carly Rae Jepsen re-recorded a classic for “Fuller House.”

Few songs are as instantly recognizable to millennials than “Everywhere You Look,” the theme song on “Full House.” When Netflix rebooted the series in 2016 with “Fuller House,” the streaming giant turned to Carly Rae Jepsen when it came time to re-record the classic tune.

Jepsen told Rolling Stone that when the opportunity to cover the song came up, she forced her team to find time in her schedule so she could take on the project.

“‘Full House’ is essentially my childhood. It was my favorite TV show growing up,” she said, adding that when she learned Butch Walker was attached to produce, it sealed the deal.

“New Girl ” star Zooey Deschanel sang the show’s theme song for four seasons.

When Zooey Deschanel landed a starring role on “New Girl” in 2011, she was also presented with the opportunity to pen and perform the show’s theme, “Hey Girl.”

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2011, Deschanel explained that she was inspired by the theme song from the “Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

“Musically, I wanted something uplifting — and then we went in to produce it, we sort of thought we wanted to Lovin’ Spoonfuls kind-of-feel production.”

The song was used for the show’s opening credits until mid-way through the series fourth season when it was replaced by a shorter, instrumental theme.

Carly Simon was commissioned to write and perform the theme for “Phenom.”

The 1993 ABC sitcom “Phenom” — a show about a 15-year-old tennis prodigy — is likely long-forgotten, as is the fact that Carly Simon sang its theme song, “The Promise and the Prize.”

Everything we know about Archie's cellmate, Mad Dog, on 'Riverdale'

archie mad dog riverdale

Warning: Spoilers ahead for season three, episode two of "Riverdale," titled "Fortune and Men's Eyes."

Archie's time at the Leopold and Loeb Juvenile Center isn't going to be easy.

Early on "Riverdale's" second episode this season, Archie meets his cellmate, Mad Dog (played by Eli Goree). Mad Dog has posters on the wall, a collection of books on a desk, a record player, and even a pull-up bar in his cell. When Archie tries to introduce himself to Mad Dog, he merely looks over at him and doesn't respond. His only words to Archie are a warning about keeping his nice shoes laced tight.

But as soon as Mad Dog is introduced, he mysteriously disappears, creating another mystery to solve.

Here's what we know about Mad Dog so far.

Who is Mad Dog?

mad dog riverdale

Initially quiet when he first meets Archie, Mad Dog later opens up when Archie asks him to play in the football game with them.

Mad Dog tells him he can't because the warden says he "has other business." When Archie presses him on what he's doing, he starts talking about his family.

"Before this place, I had a mom, a little brother, girl too, Liz," he says. "They used to come visit me every Saturday. One day the warden tells me I can't see them anymore. They've been banned. 'It's for my own good,' he said. That was two years ago."

He reveals that he is supposed to be transferred to a real prison the following month to spend 20 years serving time.

But he doesn't go into any other details about what he is in juvie for.

What happened to him?

mad dog riverdale

When Archie returns to his cell after the riots, he notices that all of Mad Dog's belongings are gone. When he asks an officer about it, he tells Archie that Mad Dog was killed in the riots. Archie knows that Mad Dog wasn't present during the game or riots. But when he tries to ask questions, the officer shuts him down.

Later, Archie is visited by the warden, who's being controlled by Hiram.

"You impressed me today," the warden tells Archie after he sent three officers to the infirmary during the riots. "Proved you've got what it takes. You've been tapped. You're going to be my new Mad Dog."

Earlier on the episode, Archie asked Mad Dog how he survived in juvie without being a Ghoulie or a Serpent and how he got all of his special items. Mad Dog became cagey and told Archie that he doesn't want to be "tapped."

The preview for next week's episode show's Archie getting into a boxing ring, which appears to be what Mad Dog was "tapped" into by the warden. The jury is out on whether something bad happened to him in the ring to explain his disappearance.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for season three, episode two of "Riverdale," titled "Fortune and Men's Eyes."

Monday night's episode of "Riverdale" was full of shocking moments.

From the deaths of both Dilton and Ben to the introduction of Evelyn Evernever (a character from the comics) to a riot at the Leopold and Loeb Juvenile Center, more mysteries and questions are present than ever before.

But as always, The CW show included a number of pop culture and comics references. We've worked with Archie Comics to find eight details you may have missed.

The warden's name is Warden Norton.

Warden Norton is the same name as the warden from "The Shawshank Redemption," the film based on Stephen King's "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption."

Mad Dog is Archie's cellmate.

Archie's cellmate's name is also the name of a fictional character in Marvel Comics. Mad-Dog was a mercenary and appeared in the "Defenders" comics.

"Riverdale" changed some more company names last night.

Dilton and Ben drank cyanide mixed with Fresh-Aid, instead of Kool-Aid.

Cheryl tells Veronica she is going to eat at TGI Thursday's instead of TGI Friday's.

But not every name is changed. The Innocence Project, a real non-profit organization that works to free wrongly convicted people, was also mentioned.

Cheryl also talks about the Viper Room, a real and notorious club in Los Angeles, once owned by Johnny Depp.

  • She says she has "the perfect scene" but was "alone" for it.
  • She also added that she is ready to let the character go.

Maisie Williams is done playing Arya Stark on "Game of Thrones" and opened up about leaving the role behind.

In an interview with The Guardian, the 21-year-old actress said that she found her final scene on the HBO show "beautiful" and revealed that she was "alone" for it.

"I ended on the perfect scene," she said "I was alone — shocker. Arya's always bloody alone. But I was alone and I had watched a lot of other people wrap. I knew the drill, I had seen the tears and heard the speeches."

She said she gave an unplanned speech after wrapping but became emotional in the moment.

"In that moment I realized what the show meant to me," she said.

Her co-star Peter Dinklage spoke to Vulture about the cast's goodbye's and said "it was really hard" to bid everyone farewell.

As for leaving the character of Arya behind, Williams said she is OK with being done.

"I got to the end and I didn't want more," she said. "I had exhausted every possible piece of Arya. And this season was quite big for me. I had a lot more to do, mainly because there's just less characters now, so everyone's got more to do."

It also killed flops like "Girlboss" and "Gypsy" after only one season, and old favorites like "House of Cards," which will end after its sixth season.

And Netflix isn't holding back in 2018 either.

Other shows that Netflix has dropped in 2018 include "Lady Dynamite,""Disjointed,""Seven Seconds," and "Everything Sucks."

Maisie Williams says her teen years were especially difficult on 'Game of Thrones': 'The hormones are really flying'

Arya Stark close up Game of Thrones

  • Maisie Williams was only 12 when she auditioned for the role of Arya Stark on HBO's "Game of Thrones."
  • She said her later teen years were the most difficult.
  • She also said that people were so mean when she tried to go back to school that she had to leave.

Maisie Williams says her mid-teen years on "Game of Thrones" were more difficult than when she first started.

The 21-year-old actress spoke with The Guardian about finding success at such a young age.

"Well, 12, not so much, but 15, 16, that's when the hormones are really flying," she said of facing difficulties. "Going through that and trying to juggle other people's opinions on who you are and how you should act, that's difficult, just because you're desperately trying to find your own identity. Whether you're famous at 15 or not, you're still confused as to who you are."

Williams was 12 when she first auditioned for the role of Arya Stark on the smash HBO show and was 13 for most of the first season.

She tried to go back to school during filming, but it was such a tough experience that she eventually turned to homeschooling.

"Leaving school, and then going back and having this awful experience, made me really bitter about life and people," she said. "People let you down and they hurt you. I went through a really dark phase of just thinking everything was awful."

She added that she understands some people might have felt threatened, but it doesn't excuse anyone's bad behavior.

"Being 15 and feeling threatened by someone who's successful, that seems like quite a human thing," she said. "When I look back, I just think it could have literally been anyone. It just so happened that I was the one who got the success."

"Game of Thrones" returns for its eighth and final season in 2019.

'Supergirl' star Mehcad Brooks says that being on the show made him realize that he was sexist

  • "Supergirl" actor Mehcad Brooks opened up to INSIDER about how playing James Olsen on The CW show has made him "a more complete, inclusive, and better person."
  • The 37-year-old elaborated and said that specifically during season one, he realized "that I was sexist and that every man in America likely is sexist because we have a foundation of gender inequality and we come from that world."
  • "'Supergirl' has really made me take a step back and say, 'Wow, even as an African American, there are certain things that I do enjoy from the perspective of male privilege,'" Brooks told us.
  • Brooks believes that "we're on the precipice of overturning something really big here" and hopes that the series "can get into people's homes and subvert some of the bad ideas that we hold so close."

Mehcad Brooks says that starring as James Olsen on The CW's "Supergirl" helped him realize that he was sexist, and hopes that the show can encourage other people to reevaluate their beliefs.

"Playing James Olsen has made me a more complete, inclusive, and better person," Brooks, who stars as the acting CEO of CatCo Worldwide Media and vigilante The Guardian, told INSIDER.

The 37-year-old explained that previous roles he's taken on "were beneath my character, and started to affect me, so I had to take a step back and figure out who I am and do better work." With his CW character, the experience has "been the opposite."

"He's such a good guy and he's so socially conscious," Brooks continued. "I think his mission statement is: 'Justice is your birthright.'"

Brooks explained that during season one, which premiered in 2015, he came to the conclusion that he had sexist views.

"We were doing all these episodes that were focusing on women empowerment and I was reading the scripts and I was going through the whole thing and I was just talking to Melissa [Benoist, who stars as Kara Danvers/Supergirl] about this and talking to Chyler [Leigh, who plays Alex Danvers] and reading the storylines, and then I realized something that I never realized in my life, that I was sexist and that every man in America likely is sexist because we have a foundation of gender inequality and we come from that world," he said.

Brooks went on to say that he was on "the low side of the spectrum," but "there were a few things here and there, even if I wasn't manifesting them, that I didn't think about."

"'Supergirl' has really made me take a step back and say, 'Wow, even as an African American, there are certain things that I do enjoy from the perspective of male privilege,'" Brooks told us. "And I hadn't even thought about that."

Now, Brooks is confident that "we're on the precipice of overturning something really big here" and making progress toward equality among people.

"There's this disgusting, incongruent ideology of male privilege and we're on the precipice of overturning it and I'm here for it, and being on 'Supergirl' is making me a feminist," the actor said. "I can say that sometimes, you take jobs and they make you another person."

"I really do hope that we can get into people's homes and subvert some of the bad ideas that we hold so close."

Here's where "The Big Bang Theory" cast was at the beginning of the series and where they are now.

Since appearing on "TBBT," Cuoco has made frequent appearances in the Priceline commercials and has done voice-over work ("Hop" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks").

She married equestrian Karl Cook in June 2018 and her new animated series "Harley Quinn," which she voices, is set to debut in 2019 on DC's new streaming service.

Johnny Galecki, who plays Leonard Hofstadter, was on "Roseanne" first.

  • Bella Thorne says she was bullied by Freeform when shooting "Famous in Love."
  • She told the Los Angeles Times that she was called "ugly" in e-mails.
  • She also said there was an incident on set.

Bella Thorne claims she was bullied by Freeform, the network behind her canceled show "Famous in Love."

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the 21-year-old actress and singer said she was seen as "uncontrollable and crazy" by the network and claims they called her "ugly" in e-mails.

"There were some things — there were some comments made that — I don't know," she said. "I'm trying to find a way around it. One issue is when you have a girl, a young girl who is on your show, you can't tell her that she's ugly or she's fat or she's this or she's that because that's going to make her feel bad."

She added that on top of the e-mails, "there was another thing that was in front of everyone on set," but didn't say what had happened. Thorne said cast members texted her with apologies for the experience afterwards.

"After, the cast was texting me, 'Oh, my God, Bella. I am so sorry. That was so awkward. I feel so bad. Do you want me to come over to your room?' 'Oh, my God, I can't believe they did that.'" she said. "It was all supposed to change on season two, and it didn't."

Freeform declined to comment for the Los Angeles Times article.

When "Famous In Love" was canceled in June 2018, Thorne tweeted about hearing the news on Twitter.

"If this is how I find out our show is canceled..I'm going to be so upset," she wrote. "Very hurtful Freeform. I woulda liked a phone call maybe."

Freeform denied the cancellation saying no decision had been reached at the time.

A report from The Hollywood Reporter said a feud between showrunner I. Marlene King and Thorne contributed to the cancellation

King denied the clashes in a tweet.

"Despite what may be out there I am not in a feud w/ @bellathorne," she wrote. "We have, and have always had, a friendly and professional relationship."

Thorne also denied the feud to the LA Times.

But just days after the initial report and denial, Freeform confirmed the show was coming to an end

"We are proud to have had the opportunity to air 'Famous In Love,'" a Freeform spokesperson wrote in a statement. "After many discussions, we have made the difficult decision not to renew the show for a third season. We want to thank our colleagues at Warner Horizon and our incredible producers, writers, cast and crew, especially Marlene King, for their creativity, hard work and dedication."

'Daredevil' season 3 takes a lot of risks and as a result is one of the best seasons of Netflix's Marvel shows

0

Daredevil season three

“Marvel's Daredevil” makes its long-awaited return to Netflix for season three Friday. We last saw Matt Murdoch/Daredevil on “The Defenders” in 2017, but this is the newest season of “Daredevil” since season two dropped in March 2016.

The show has learned quite a lot from its messy, quite boring second season whose plot I do not remember save for the introduction of the Punisher. And I cannot forget the cheesy, predictable Elektra storyline that ended the season on a low note.

But instead of playing it safe, season three returns to the excellent storytelling that made the first season such a hit with critics and audiences. It brings back Wilson Fisk, the disturbing but charismatic villain played by Vincent D'onofrio, and delves into the lives of its supporting characters like Foggy Nelson and Karen Page outside of their connections to Matt Murdock.

Why you should watch: It takes risks.

Daredevil season 3

Season three takes risks with its characters, storytelling, and experiments with style.

Rather than confining the characters to interactions with each other in the New York City neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen (which is just over 20 city blocks and is within walking distance of many other Manhattan neighborhoods), season three separates its supporting cast, lets them leave the neighborhood, and tells their individual stories before bringing them back together.

This means that Daredevil/Matt Murdock doesn’t get as much screen time as usual, but that’s a good thing. Because it means that the cast is a true ensemble. Over the show’s hiatus, the writers must have realized that while Matt Murdock’s Catholic guilt and ninja training were exciting for a bit, we don’t need to see much more of it anymore.

What’s hot: Wilson Fisk’s return.

Daredevil Fisk

“Daredevil” took a huge risk by bringing back former villain Wilson Fisk, or Kingpin. It could have gone a boring, repetitive route, too reflective of the first season. But instead, Fisk’s return makes the stakes higher than ever for Murdock, who is running from the law because of a Daredevil copycat that Fisk orchestrated.

Because of this, Daredevil is literally pitted against himself. But this also works in the figurative sense. Murdock changed a lot off-screen, and that combined with Fisk’s plans playing out successfully, you really feel like Murdock and friends are at risk. That’s an incredible accomplishment for a superhero story, because you usually always know everyone will come out on top.

What’s not: The glacial pace, and Karen Page’s journalism skills.

Daredevil season 3

For a chunk of the season, the main characters barely interact with each other. It’s one of the reasons why the season works. But because it takes so much time to focus on them and their separate lives, the season moves at a slow pace that might make you stop watching. But you shouldn’t stop, because the slow burn is worth it. In the end, the pace has meaning.

Karen Page isn’t a terrible journalist. She knows how to get a story. The problem is that she will do almost anything to get what she wants. Including, without spoiling anything, violating journalistic and moral integrity. Karen gets way more to do on season three, and gets to lead her own story instead of support the male characters. But she considers changing her career. She’d make a great detective!

The bottom line: The show's new direction is good.

Daredevil season three

“Daredevil” isn’t the greatest show on television, and isn’t breaking any new ground. But if you’re already invested in the characters and enjoy the show, the show’s new direction and the return of Wilson Fisk will impress you.

It’s well worth bingeing over the weekend. And the best part is that it’s one of those shows that you can have on while you’re occupied with other things, so you won’t miss much if you look away for a bit while folding laundry or shopping online.

Grade: B+

A fan mapped out how many words Daryl has said on 'The Walking Dead' since season one and it's eye opening

daryl dixon walking dead

  • It's no secret that Daryl hasn't spoken much on "The Walking Dead" during the past few seasons.
  • One fan mapped out how much Daryl has spoken — or hasn't spoken — on the show since its start.
  • A simple chart by Reddit user Da1tontheGreat shows Daryl barely spoke on season seven and didn't speak much during seasons five and six, either.
  • "The Walking Dead" star Norman Reedus has also addressed his character's lack of dialogue on the show. He said former showrunner Scott Gimple told him, "Don't worry, you'll talk again one day."

Fans have said that Daryl hasn't spoken much on "The Walking Dead" for years now, and we finally have proof to back it up.

One hero fan went through the series' first eight seasons and painstakingly tracked how many words Daryl (Norman Reedus) spoke on the show each year.  Reddit user Da1tonTheGreatshared a simple chart mapping out the number of words Reedus spoke on the show's subreddit.

It's eye opening.

how much daryl dixon spoke on the walking dead

You can view it here

The chart shows a drastic drop in dialogue for Daryl during seasons five, six, and seven while Scott M. Gimple was the series' showrunner. Daryl spoke the most lines during season four, also while Gimple was in command, and had significantly more lines early on during the show's first few seasons.

What was going on during season seven?

Daryl was imprisoned and tortured for a good portion of season seven by Negan and his Saviors. Negan tried breaking Daryl to try and make him one of his own. Daryl felt a lot of personal grief after taking responsibility for the death of close friend Glenn at Negan's hands.

daryl the walking dead

Now that a year and a half has passed since the end of the war with Negan, Daryl is speaking again a lot. "The Walking Dead" also has a new showrunner in the series' longtime writer Angela Kang. Fans immediately noticed the difference in how much Daryl has been speaking during the show's latest season.

Reedus is aware of the change, too, and addressed it recently on "Walking Dead" aftershow, "Talking Dead."

"The last couple of seasons I didn't say much, that's true," said Reedus after the series' season nine premiere. "It's always been story first. And [former showrunner] Scott [M. Gimple] was always story first. He would tell me, 'Don't worry, you'll talk again one day.'"

Well, Daryl's speaking and we don't plan to see him stopping soon with Andrew Lincoln departing the series as Rick Grimes this season

11 details you may have missed on Sunday's episode of 'The Walking Dead'

maggie walking dead

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead,""Warning Signs."

The mystery of the missing Saviors may have come to an end on Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead," but a larger war may be brewing beneath the surface between Rick and Maggie. The two have very different ways of dealing with problems in their respective communities.

Plus, Father Gabriel looks like he's going to get whisked away by Anne on that mystery helicopter. From the Oceanside men to another look at Hershel's watch, there were a lot of nods to previous seasons this week.

Keep reading to see what you may have missed.

Sunday's opening of "The Walking Dead" teases a threatening sign, "Final Warning."

As Justin reanimates into one of the undead, pay attention to the screen and you'll notice the ominous message. After watching the episode, it seems to be a message to the Saviors from the Oceanside women. There were also some thoughts this may be a message from upcoming villains, The Whisperers.

If you've been watching the season closely, this isn't the first time we've seen this message.

You can see the same message very briefly on the show's new opening credits.

Showrunner Angela Kang said there are a lot of callbacks and Easter eggs waiting to be found in the new opening. Not all of them are nods to past events on the show like Carl and Glenn's death.

The noose hanging from the barn and the words "Final Warning" all hinted at moments to come on season nine.

It's also worth noting that we've seen writing on walls like this before on the show. During season five when the group went back to Noah's community, a warning sign could briefly be seen behind Michonne saying, "Wolves Not Far." That sign teased the eventual introduction of a gruesome group who referred to themselves as the Wolves, who attacked Alexandria.

Rick heads down the stairs at the episode’s start and touches a panel with two handprints.

Did your eyes tear up as you realized Rick took the old deck from his house at Alexandria with his children's handprints and hung it up on a wall?

Carl spent his good last day making sure that he spent some time with his little sister before saying goodbye to Michonne and Rick.

The entire scene with Rick is even more emotional when you think about how he was going from room to room checking in on all of his loved ones before he began the day. Carl was the last one he passed before starting his day.

'The Walking Dead' gives a big hint about the mystery helicopter that keeps popping up on the show

Warning: There are major spoilers ahead for Sunday's "The Walking Dead,""Warning Signs."

Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead" brought us one step closer to learning the mystery behind that helicopter Rick Grimes first saw during season eight on a walk to the junkyard.

We've known since the end of last season that Anne has been making contact with the chopper, and on episode three of the season, we finally saw Anne speak with someone from the helicopter.

"It's Jadis," she says into the Walkie Talkie. "I know you're in range, I saw the helicopter last night."

Someone responds and asks whether or not she has an "A" or a "B"? Anne says she has neither, but insinuates that she just wants to leave with them. She's told it doesn't work like that. Instead, she'll need to give the mysterious voice "an 'A'" the next day.

When Father Gabriel showed up after spying on Anne, she revealed she had been trading people to the chopper for supplies for her people. She admits that when she took Father Gabriel and later Rick, she would have traded them, too.

Though we know for certain a few things about the helicopter, there are still a lot of questions left unanswered. Who has the helicopter? Why do they continue contact with Anne? What does this whole "A" or "B" code mean?

On the series' aftershow, "Talking Dead," Pollyanna McIntosh, who plays Anne/Jadis, said she's been in on the secret for a while.

"I felt, 'Thank God everyone else knows because I've known for ages!'" McIntosh said of everyone finally learning Anne was trading people. "I mean I figured, I kind of figured it out. That's the backstory I decided, and thank God it was right."

We're pretty certain it's a different community we haven't seen yet on the show. Earlier this year, INSIDER spoke with McIntosh and she told us as much.

"This seems to be some other situation out there. Is it an extension of the Heapster community? Is it another community? Is it a single person? Is it a group? I don't wanna give too much away," said McIntosh of the helicopter

We're sure we'll get more answers in the next few weeks. Until then, a few fans have some theories on the helicopter's significance on season nine.

One theory is that the people in the chopper took Heath. His van had been spotted in the junkyard while Rick was there.

Another theory is that the helicopter is somehow involved in how Rick will leave the show on the season's fifth episode.

Since Rick told Father Gabriel to "keep an eye" on Anne, Undeadwalking.com believes Rick may go searching for his friend. If he winds up finding Anne, she may drug him and go off in the chopper with him instead of Father Gabriel, leaving Michonne and the others to search for him. You can read the full theory here

The Break With Michelle Wolf

A slew of TV shows were canceled in 2017, and the list of shows canceled in 2018 has grown rapidly since May as networks decide their schedules of new and returning shows, and figure out what they're doing in 2019.

Despite slightly better reception for its second season that dropped in September, Netflix has canceled "Iron Fist" after two seasons, a show that wasn't a hit with critics. Days later, Netflix canceled Marvel's "Luke Cage," leaving many wondering why these seemingly successful superhero shows are getting the axe.

So far in 2018, networks have canceled fan favorites like "The Last Man on Earth" and "Quantico." Fox also canceled its quirky cop comedy "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," but NBC picked it up for another season less than two days later.

ABC also canceled the previously renewed "Roseanne" revival, after Roseanne Barr posted a racist tweet about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. However, ABC announced a spin-off called "The Conners" without Barr coming this fall.

In 2018, the streaming giants are canceling more shows than ever as well, with many getting cut on Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix

So if you're wondering why a show you love hasn't returned in 2018, it might have been canceled. (You can also use this list to see what shows are not returning in the fall or in 2019.)

Here are all the shows that were canceled in 2017 and 2018, including those from networks and streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon:

10 of Midge's best outfits in 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel'

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

When "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" first made its marvelous debut on Amazon Prime, viewers were captivated by the vivacious Miriam "Midge" Maisel and her unforgettable style. With a penchant for in-your-face color and matching accessories, the comedienne had a funny joke and memorable outfit for every situation she found herself in.

The Amy Sherman-Palladino comedy, which showcases Manhattanite life in the 1950s, had Midge (played by Rachel Brosnahan) traipsing around the city in jaunty hats, elegant gloves, and long coats in every shade of fuchsia, Kelly green, and bubblegum pink.

Although you might stop short of wearing a polka-dotted scarf around the office or attempting the ultimate color blocking challenge with an orange top, purple shorts, and red tights, there's no denying that Midge is a style maven on TV right now.

Here are Midge's ten best outfits from "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's" first season.

Midge mastered the light pink and magenta velvet pairing in the opening scene.

When we meet Midge Maisel, she is stepping out to the local butcher shop in the most fabulous of ensembles: a pink coat paired with a magenta dress and a matching hat and gloves. It's the ultimate power outfit to skip the line at the butchers.

Midge bailed comedian Lenny Bruce out of jail in a green gown with some major "Atonement" vibes.

After Midge finds out that her husband Joel is cheating on her, she assumes that her life is over. That is until she gets on stage and realizes that unlike Joel, she's actually got comedic talent.

Midge dramatically asking Lenny Bruce whether he "loves" comedy in a hunter green dress (paired with a matching hat and gloves, of course) has to be one of the best moments from the early episodes.

Midge wore the ultimate red dress while seeing Joel again.

When Joel comes to Yom Kippur dinner at her family's house, Midge is dressed to the nines in a showstopping version of the classic '50s dress.

It's proof that revenge is best served cold and while looking completely fabulous.

3 great TV shows to watch on Netflix this week, including the new season of 'Daredevil'

Daredevil season three

Peak TV is too much TV. Thankfully, we're here to tell you what to watch so you don't spend hours making a decision instead of actually watching something.

Every week, we put together a list of three great shows available to stream on Netflix.

We pick shows you can finish in a day, and some you can just get started on binge-watching. We mix shows that have recently come onto the service with some old favorites you might have missed.

Since it's October and very close to Halloween, we selected three Netflix originals that have a spooky vibe — including "The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell," a Halloween-themed baking show.

From "Daredevil" to "The Haunting of Hill House," here are three great TV shows you can binge-watch on Netflix this week:

Marvel's "Daredevil"— A Netflix Original

Netflix description: Blinded as a young boy, Matt Murdock fights injustice by day as a lawyer and by night as the superhero Daredevil in Hell's Kitchen, New York City.

Seasons: 3

Episodes: 39

If you were disappointed with the clunky second season of "Daredevil," leave it in the past. Season three is excellent and marks the return of Wilson Fisk, one of the best villains in the Marvel Netflix show universe and arguably one of the best Marvel villains adapted on screen.

Season three has real stakes and takes full advantage of its supporting cast.

"The Haunting of Hill House"— A Netflix Original

Netflix description: Flashing between past and present, a fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it.

Seasons: 1

Episodes: 10

This show is genuinely terrifying. But its strength isn't the jumpscares: it's the story and the characters. Knowing who these people are makes the horror element so much better and scarier than a standard horror movie or series that puts the story and characters second.

"The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell"— A Netflix original

Netflix description: Wickedly talented baker and artist Christine McConnell fills her home with haunting confections, creepy crafts — and wildly inappropriate creatures.

Seasons: 1

Episodes: 6

This new baking show has it all: spooky but cute puppets, delicious sweets, and unlike any cooking show, an engrossing plot that spans the entire six-episode season. If you love Halloween and shows like "The Great British Baking Show," this is a must-watch.

Here are the 2 new doctors who joined 'Grey's Anatomy' in season 15

Grey's Anatomy

  • In September, "Grey's Anatomy"season 15 kicked off on ABC.
  • Joining the cast is "The OC" alum Chris Carmack, who is playing Grey Sloan Memorial's new ortho surgeon.
  • Alex Landi is also joining the cast as the show's first gay male surgeon.

It's hard to believe that season 15 of  "Grey's Anatomy" is already well underway. In September, the show premiered along with two new cast members.

So who are Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital's newest employees? Chris Carmack and Alex Landi have both joined the show as recurring cast members.

Chris Carmack joined the cast as Dr. Atticus Lincoln

Carmack, who you might know from "The OC" and "Nashville," is playing a new ortho surgeon named Link, who's spent a lot of the season so far hitting on various doctors, including Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) without much luck.

"He's the first ortho god that we've had [at Grey Sloan] since Callie, who was an ortho goddess in my mind," executive producer Krista Vernoff told TVLine last month. "Chris brings his own sense of humor to the set, and that has been really joyful to explore."

Alex Landi joined the cast as Dr. Nico Kim

Alex Landi

Landi is relatively new to the acting world but has credits that include a recent guest-starring role on CBS' "Bull."

His character, Dr. Nico Kim, is a major milestone for the show as he's the show's first openly gay male surgeon, despite the fact that lesbian pediatric surgeon Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and bisexual ortho surgeon Callie (Sara Ramirez) had been on the show for years until their departures in seasons 13 and 14.

Kim made his debut in the Season 15 premiere and has already become a fan favorite as he potentially sparked a romance with fellow doc Levi "Glasses" Schmitt.

20 surprising things you probably didn’t know about 'Friday Night Lights'

0
0

Friday Night Lights vinceEven if you've never watched "Friday Night Lights," chances are you've heard the most famous line from the hit TV show: "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose."

The show, based on the 1990 book by Buzz Bissinger and the 2004 movie of the same name, is highly regarded by fans, even if the ratings at the time didn't always reflect it. From 2006 -2011, the series followed a fictional high school football team in Dillon, Texas.

Here are surprising things you probably didn’t know about "Friday Night Lights."

Taylor Kitsch drank beer during his audition tape for Tim Riggins.

During a "Friday Night Lights" reunion at the ATX Television Festival, Scott Porter (who played Jason Street) said Kitsch downed one tall-boy after opening it with one hand, then opened another one.

When he finished, he said, "This is Taylor Kitsch, reading for Riggins." Porter added, "And then he begins the scene by the pool where he says, 'Texas forever' for the first time."

Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton drove from Los Angeles to Austin together before filming to get to know each other.

Once Chandler and Britton were hired to play husband and wife, they decided a long road trip together would help their on-screen chemistry.

The idea terrified creator Peter Berg, who told Grantland, "Connie and Kylie developed a very flirtatious, precocious relationship right off the bat. And Kyle, of course, is married." He added, "I was convinced they would be having some torrid affair by the time they reached Sante Fe and Kyle's marriage would be over by the time they got to Austin."

Britton almost didn't take the role of Tami Taylor because she didn't want to just be Coach Taylor's wife.

Britton played the coach's wife in the movie version of "Friday Night Lights," and when Berg offered her the role in the show, she said no.

Berg told Grantland, she said, "Are you f---ing kidding me? You think I'm going to spend 10 years sitting on a hardwood bleacher getting splinters in my a-- and cheering on Kyle Chandler? You're out of your mind."

Berg had to promise Britton they would give Tami a job, "dimension," and a "real voice." They had to promise to make her role significant in order to get her on board.
