A huge 'Monday Night Football' boosted NFL ratings, despite Trump attacks

Despite presidential controversy amid a prominent NFL protest movement, and a tepid "Sunday Night Football," a large audience for "Monday Night Football" actually propelled the NFL's third week into a year-over-year ratings improvement, according to The Hollywood Reporter

The outlet reported that the average rating across all Sunday and Monday game was up 3% compared to the same week in 2016.

The "Monday Night Football" matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals made for the strongest ratings for a "MNF" game this season. Ratings for the game rose 63% above the week three game from 2016, according to ESPN, though that game suffered from being in direct competition with a presidential debate.

As ESPN broke with tradition to air the national anthem before the "MNF" game, the entire Dallas Cowboys team, including owner Jerry Jones, kneeled together before the anthem.

The unified image capped off a weekend that saw over 200 players kneel during the anthem in protest of police brutality, racial injustice, and the divisive comments of President Trump, who repeatedly stated that any kneeling protester should be "fired," while attacking the league's "bad ratings."

Trump continued his attacks on the NFL into Tuesday morning, writing that NFL ratings are "way down except before game starts, when people tune in to see whether or not our country will be disrespected."

Though the variation of game matchups (and a number of other factors) can make it hard to judge NFL ratings on a week-to-week basis, the league did see a 12% drop in ratings in week one of this year, followed by a 15% drop in week two, according to Nielsen.

NFL ratings were also down an average of 8% over the course of last season.

Nonetheless, this overall uptick in viewership for week three at least provides the league with some ratings relief amid a weekend of controversy.

The INSIDER Summary:

  • The couple shared the bittersweet news on their blog and explained that they need some time to "catch [their] breath."
  • "Fixer Upper" viewers are already expressing their disappointment on social media.
  • However, the Gaineses reassured their fans that they have exciting, new projects on the horizon, including Joanna's spin-off show, "Behind the Design."

It's official: The fifth season of HGTV's hit show, "Fixer Upper," will sadly be its last, People reported on Tuesday.

"Fixer Upper" stars Chip and Joanna Gaines announced the news on their blog and shared a sweet video message for their fans.

"It is with both sadness and expectation that we share the news that season 5 of 'Fixer Upper' will be our last," the couple wrote.

In their post, the Gaineses thanked HGTV, their production company, the crew of "Fixer Upper," and their fans for their support. The couple, who stressed that their family and marriage have "never been stronger," said they simply need some time "to shore up" and "catch [their] breath for a moment."

A post shared by Joanna Stevens Gaines (@joannagaines) on Jul 8, 2017 at 1:28pm PDT on

The two added: "While we are confident that this is the right choice for us, it has for sure not been an easy one to come to terms with. Our family has grown up alongside yours, and we have felt you rooting us on from the other side of the screen. How bittersweet to say goodbye to the very thing that introduced us all in the first place."

Of course, the Gaineses' announcement shocked their massive fanbase, many of whom have already taken to social media to express their disappointment and heartbreak.

However, the announcement wasn't all bad. "There's so much good, new stuff coming your way!" Chip and Joanna wrote on their blog post. They continued: "We are really, really proud of season 5. We laid it all on the field and didn't hold anything back. We think it's the perfect finale to this amazing journey we've been on."

"Fixer Upper" viewers can also look forward to Joanna's spin-off show, "Behind the Design," which will "follow shortly after" season 5's premiere, coming sometime this November.

Indeed, Chip and Joanna reassured their fans that they're not going anywhere: "We aren't done renovating homes. [...] We aren't done working towards restoration in all things or helping out those who could use a hand. [...] Who knows what the future holds, but we're excited for whatever is around the bend and in the meantime, we will definitely be staying in touch."

Jon Snow Battle of the Bastards

The INSIDER Summary:

  • HBO has confirmed the final directors for "Game of Thrones" season eight.
  • David Nutter, Miguel Sapochnik, and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will direct the last six episodes.
  • No order has been set yet for their episodes, but sources tell INSIDER it is likely Benioff and Weiss themselves will direct the series finale.

The eighth and final season of "Game of Thrones" has a killer director's lineup that should get any longtime fan pumped. HBO confirmed with INSIDER that the final six episodes will be helmed by David Nutter, Miguel Sapochnik, and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Though we don't know details of the episode order or length, let alone when the season will air, a source tells INSIDER that Benioff and Weiss themselves will likely direct the final episode of the series.

Miguel Sapochnik is the notable director behind three of the series' most acclaimed episodes: "Hardhome,""Battle of the Bastards," and season six finale "The Winds of Winter."

Sapochnik was unable to return for season seven due to scheduling conflicts, so fans should be thrilled to see he's back for the final installment of the series.

Cersei Lannister before Walk of Shame Game of Thrones Macall B. Polay HBO

David Nutter is another noted director on "Game of Thrones." His most well-known episodes are season three's devastating Red Wedding chapter, "The Rains of Castamere," and the finale of season five, "Mother's Mercy."

As for Benioff and Weiss, they've each been separately credited for directing "Game of Thrones" episodes. Weiss was director for the season four premiere "Two Swords," while Benioff was credited for season three's "Walk of Punishment."

According to Entertainment Weekly, the singular director's credits for Benioff and Weiss were due to the director's guild rules which "permit only one director can be credited for an episode of television." As EW reported, "it's unclear how this one will sort out" when it comes to their shared directing of the finale.

Jon Snow Game of Thrones

The final season of "Game of Thrones" will be six episodes, and as of now HBO has not confirmed how many episodes each director will get nor the order in which their episodes will go.

No matter which episodes are given to which director, fans can sleep easy knowing the final installment of this beloved series is in extremely capable hands.

For more on the final season of "Game of Thrones," read our breakdown of why HBO is reportedly filming multiple endings and why the series might not return until 2019.

7 things you need to know about the talented 9-year-old starring on 'Young Sheldon'

young sheldon

CBS aired a preview of "Young Sheldon" Monday night. It's shaping up to be — for better or worse — one of their most anticipated shows of the year.

The preview had nearly 17 million viewers, making it the biggest comedy premiere in four years, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Set decades earlier than "The Big Bang Theory," the show follows the youth of a 9-year-old Sheldon Cooper going to high school. Jim Parsons, who plays, uh, "old" Sheldon in "The Big Bang Theory," narrates the episodes.

At the heart of the show is a 9-year-old actor who's a bit of a prodigy himself. He's not a physicist, but Iain Armitage already has an impressive resume. Here are seven things you need to know about him.

SEE ALSO: 'The Big Bang Theory' premiere's big cliffhanger was overshadowed by an even larger surprise

He has a vlog where he's a theater critic.

For the past few years, Armitage has been running a YouTube channel where he discusses different plays and reviews them. He also reprises some songs from the musicals he watches. He goes under the moniker "IainLovesTheatre."

"I had to wait for seven hours to get tickets," he said of "Hamilton," which he caught at an early run at the Public Theater. "It is one of the most tremendous, amazing, fantastic — better than fantastic — shows ever."

On his channel, he also reviews magic shows.

He wants to be a magician when he grows up.

Acting is nice and all, but Armitage wants to be the next David Copperfield or Criss Angel.

"I have a tablet filled with magic tricks, to the very brim,"he said in an interview with Vulture. "I love magic. I think I want to be a magician in Las Vegas when I grow up."

Both of his parents are theater people.

One of the reasons why Armitage is able to see so many shows is because both of his parents work in theater. He's the son of Tony-nominated actor Euan Morton and the Broadway producer Lee Armitage.

When "Once Upon A Time" returns to ABC for its seventh season October 6, Storybrooke is going to look a lot different.

In May, the network confirmed Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin), Prince Charming (Josh Dallas), Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison), Henry (Jared Gilmore), Belle (Emilie de Ravin), and Zelena/The Wicked Witch (Rebecca Mader) would all be leaving after season six

If you're sad that you won't be seeing more of Emma and Hook together after they were just married, don't despair. Morrison said she will be back for at least an episode to send her character off into the sunset. A few other actors will reportedly return as guests and in minor recurring roles.

How exactly will the show continue without half of its main cast?

Season seven will add a bunch of fresh faces to the cast. In addition to airing on a new night (the dreaded Friday night death slot) this fall, the seventh season will literally hit the reset button moving 10 years into the future. The season six finale ended with a near mirror of the series' pilot with a grown Henry (Andrew J. West) being recruited by his daughter to help remind him of all the fairytale adventures and characters he forgot about.

Keep reading to see which of your favorites will return along with the many new faces who will join "OUAT."

Season seven of the show will fast forward a decade to revolve around Emma's son Henry (Andrew J. West) all grown-up.

He was visited at the end of season six by his daughter Lucy (Alison Fernandez) who will have to convince him he has an entirely different life he can't recall.

We'll quickly learn Henry had a child with a new version of Cinderella (Dania Ramirez).

Caitlyn Jenner won't be on the next season of 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians'

Caitlyn Jenner

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Kris Jenner said in an interview published Tuesday that she's unsure if Caitlyn Jenner is appearing on the upcoming 14th season of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," but she hasn't shot any scenes with her ex-husband.
  • Caitlyn 's representative confirmed to INSIDER that indeed the transgender reality star won't return for the next season of "KUWTK."
  • The divorced couple stopped speaking over things Caitlyn wrote in her memoir, according to daughter Kim Kardashian.

A big part of the Kardashian-Jenner crew won't be around on the upcoming 14th season of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians."

A representative for Caitlyn Jenner has confirmed to INSIDER that she won't appear on the upcoming season of the E! reality series.

The rep's confirmation coincides with the somewhat unclear answer Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner gave to Variety when it asked if her former husband-turned-transgender activist would appear on the upcoming season.

"I don’t think so. I don’t think so, but you might see [her] in maybe Episode 1. I’m just not sure. We’re in the middle of shooting Episode 14. So not when I’ve been around, but I think there might be something in one. I can’t remember. I can’t remember what happened yesterday! [Laughing]"

A rep for the show didn't immediately respond to our request for comment.

We got our first taste of Caitlyn's absence when she didn't appear on last weekend's 10th Anniversary "KUWTK" special. Instead, she was represented in footage both before and after her transition into a woman.

But it also follows quite a large amount of discord between the former couple, who divorced officially in 2014 after 23 years.

In May, Kim Kardashian said on Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live" that Kris was so hurt by things Caitlyn wrote in her memoir that there was "zero" chance her mother would speak to Caitlyn again.

"No, one. No, I would say 2%,” Kim further explained. “And those are [half-sisters] Kendall and Kylie. That’s their percentage. All fair, I think.”

And as Kris is one of the executive producers of "KUWTK," is there any surprise that Caitlyn isn't returning to the show?

At any rate, Caitlyn did recently appear on daughter Kylie's reality show, "Life of Kylie." But as far as her own show, "I am Cait," it was canceled by E! after its second season.

This new development for the show arrives as reports that Kylie is pregnant has been putting a spotlight on her relationship with her father, whose rep denied Caitlyn was reportedly kept in the dark for some time about her daughter's alleged pregnancy.

New reports say Khloe Kardashian is pregnant

The INSIDER Summary:

  • A report from Us Weekly on Tuesday alleges that Khloe Kardashian is pregnant.
  • The report cited unnamed sources who exclusively told the site she is having a baby with her NBA player boyfriend, Tristan Thompson.
  • TMZ also reported the news, citing sources who said that the 33-year-old is three months pregnant, while the sex of the alleged baby is unclear.
  • The news comes days after TMZ broke the story that Kylie Jenner is reportedly pregnant. The site later reported that Kylie is five months pregnant and is allegedly having a baby girl.
  • People on social media are freaking out about the prospect of Kim Kardashian West, Khloe, and Kylie all being pregnant at the same time.

A new report from Us Weekly alleges that Khloe Kardashian is pregnant, citing multiple sources who exclusively told the site that she is having a baby.

The site reported on Tuesday that unnamed sources said that the 33-year-old is having her first child with her 26-year-old NBA player boyfriend, Tristan Thompson.

Following Us Weekly's report, TMZ also reported that Khloe is pregnant, citing multiple sources who say she is three months pregnant, while the sex of the alleged baby is currently unclear.

The news comes just a few days after TMZ first broke the news that Kylie Jenner is reportedly pregnant with her boyfriend Travis Scott's baby. On Tuesday, TMZ reported that Kylie is reportedly five months pregnant and is having a girl.

While people had a field day on social media with the news about Kylie, Kardashian-Jenner fans are once again freaking out on the internet — this time about the prospect of Khloe becoming a mom.

People already seem to be bored of the news about Kylie.

And some don't seem to be enthused about the possibility of a Khloe pregnancy.

Others have pointed out that she would make a great mother.

Meanwhile, some people can't get over the idea that Khloe and Kylie could be pregnant at the same time.

One user pointed out how there is no confirmation about any of the Kardashian-Jenner sisters who are reportedly expecting children.

Another person suspects these reports are all a ploy to make us feel better about 2017.

As one Twitter user pointed out above, Kim Kardashian West is also reportedly expecting a child via a surrogate. Kim is allegedly having a baby girl in January 2018.

Khloe has spoken about wanting to have children in the past, and once revealed she had a fertility scare where her doctor told her she didn't have a "normal" amount of egg-producing follicles for someone her age. However, on a second visit to her doctor, after going off her birth control, Khloe was told she could get pregnant.

"Tristan and I definitely talk about starting a family," the reality TV star said during the season 13 finale of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," which aired on June 11. "He wants to have five or six kids with me and that's lovely. We could start at one and we could grow from there. But now knowing I'm not on birth control is just like — it's scary. It's like a really big step."

Khloe and Thompson have been together for almost a year, according to TMZ.

The Cleveland Cavaliers player posted this tweet on Tuesday, as news broke of Khloe's alleged pregnancy — although it's unclear if he was referring to that news, or another story about his team's signing of Dwayne Wade.

He later tweeted that he's looking forward to next season, though it's unclear exactly what he could be referring to.

On June 26, Thompson and Khloe appeared to be cozy with one another at the "Keeping Up With the Kardashian" star's 33rd birthday party. Khloe Snapchatted some Polaroid photos — one of which was labeled "Dad + Mom"— from the celebration. A Life & Style story from September 15 speculated that the Snapchat may have been Khloe's subtle way of sharing that she was allegedly pregnancy.

As Life & Style noted, Thompson also posted a sweet message to Khloe on social media for her birthday, captioning the below Instagram photo from June 27: "Happy bday [sic] my love, this picture right here sums up how wild, crazy and how much we love each other. Let's continue to build more memories and cherish them with each other. God bless you, I love you."

The "Revenge Body" star, who is known for her love of working out, posted this photo on Instagram showing her chiseled abs on Saturday.

The 'This is Us' season premiere had the perfect Kardashian pregnancy joke and fans lost it

kevin kate this is us

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "This is Us" season two.

The season two premiere of "This is Us" brought back Randall's birth father and shined some light on Jack's mysterious death. But it also gave us a Kardashian joke that couldn't have come at a more perfect time.

Early into the season two premiere, Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge) laments about not being able to join Kevin (Justin Hartley) out in Los Angeles while he's on set a new movie. Not only will she miss out on celebrating his 37th birthday, but she'll also miss out on spotting a Kardashian.

Kevin cracks a quick-witted joke to cheer her up.

"The Kardashians aren’t going anywhere," says Kevin. "I promise — They're like gremlins. By next week, there'll be like a bazillion more of them."

The joke came hours after reports that Khloe Kardashian is pregnant with her first child. That news followed earlier reports from last Friday that her sister Kylie Jenner is pregnant, too. Kim Kardashian is expecting her third child with Kanye West via surrogate in January. So, yes, there could be quite the Kardashian boom at present.

Fans were quick to call out the one-liner:

For the record, E! is part of the NBCUniversal family if you want to start to go down that rabbit hole. But this is most likely a conveniently-timed joke. The show was filming over the summer

But hey, maybe next week's episode will predict something about the next "Star Wars" movie.

In the age of peak TV, what shows make the cut as the best?

The past 20 years have blessed us with some of the greatest television series of all time, but Rotten Tomatoes wanted to figure out what shows (mostly) everyone agrees on.

Rotten Tomatoes surveyed people to find out, and the results are both shocking and expected.

jack this is us nbc

Warning: There are huge spoilers ahead for "This is Us" season two.

Get the water works going. Season two of "This is Us" returned to NBC Tuesday night and we have a better idea of how Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia) dies on the show.

Throughout the episode, we see the fallout of the season one finale as Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack struggle with a separation. Jack goes off to stay with his friend Miguel while Rebecca tries to carry on with their three children. By the end of the episode, the two finally have a collected conversation and Jack opens up to his wife with some distressing news.

Last chance to head back before major spoilers.

jack this is us

Jack tells Rebecca that while she may think he's a perfect husband, he's not. He admits to having a drinking problem, one that he's been hiding for awhile and that he needs to overcome on his own before returning to his family.

"I'm drunk right now. I have been drunk all day. I have been drunk for weeks, and I thought I had it under control, like the first time, but I have a problem, Rebecca. And I’ve hidden it from you for a very long time. And I’ve hidden it from my kids, and I need to get a handle on it before I can walk back into that house," Jack says of his alcohol addiction.

Though he shuts the door, Rebecca returns and tells him she's not giving up on him because he's not an alcoholic.

"Get in the car, Jack. You are my husband and I am your wife, and if you have a problem we will fix it together," she tells him. "I just need you to get in the car so we can go home together."

The two presumably get in the car together and go home. It seemed like everything was going to be ok. But "This is Us" rarely let's you off the hook without pulling the rug out from under you in any episode's final five minutes. Right afterward, we flash forward ahead an undisclosed amount of time to learn that Jack has died.

The final scene of the premiere shows Rebecca in a car with some of Jack's belongings. As the shot pulls back, she's crying in front of a charred house. It leads many to assume Jack died in the burning house as a result of his struggle with alcohol.

But not everyone's buying that Jack will die as a result of his alcoholism.

The answer may not be so clear cut. In the show's first season, Kate blamed herself for her father's death.

It's definitely possible that Jack may heroically sacrifice himself to save his kids, a pet, or something else in a house fire. There was that mysterious dog seen at the end of the premiere as well as Kevin in a cast.

If you can't wait to learn more, don't worry. "This is Us" creator and executive producer Dan Fogelman tells People and EW we'll learn everything about Jack's death this season.

"We had talked about the fire and what happened from day 1 of starting," said Fogelman. "This has always been the plan. You’re seeing a lot of things that are going to reveal themselves over the course of the season… The writers have sat and analyzed every bit of minutiae. A lot of the little things are going to come into play over the course of this season. All the answers about how Jack died, it’s all going to happen this season."

In the series' digital aftershow, Fogelman says there are a lot of little things viewers should pay attention to throughout the season.

"There's a bunch of clues at the end of the episode. You see the dog with Kate and you see the red-headed girl, who you're not quite sure who she is, with Randall, and you see Kevin and his leg," says Fogelman in a conversation with Ventimiglia. "And so we know we're marching towards something, and we now know what we're marching towards. And we have these little markers that I think you'll see in the course of the season that will bring you closer to everything people want to know about Jack's death."

Fogelman also told Variety that Jack doesn't end up dying four years later or anything like that. The show won't misdirect viewers when it comes to that. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be surprised if Jack's battle with alcoholism is a red herring.

"This is Us" airs Tuesday nights on NBC at 9 p.m. You can watch the emotional scene below.

While filming the romantic scenes between Jon and his Wildling lover, Harington and Leslie fell in love in real life. Now five years later, they're engaged and living together. Keep reading to see the 15 best onscreen moments between Jon Snow and Ygritte.

SEE ALSO: 'Game of Thrones' stars Kit Harington and Rose Leslie announced their engagement — here's their real-life love story

Jon Snow first met Ygritte on season two when he went ranging beyond the Wall.

Jon couldn't bring himself to execute Ygritte after seeing she was a young woman.

"Strike hard and true, Jon Snow," Ygritte told him. "Or I'll come back and haunt ya."

But he couldn't behead her, and his hesitation cost him dearly. They were left behind by his fellow Night's Watch brothers and Jon was lost.

The first night they were together (with Ygritte as Jon's prisoner) Jon angrily spooned her "for warmth."

Ygritte was flirty with Jon from the get-go and she jumped at the chance to convince him that sleeping close together was the only way to survive the cold night. As he grumpily spooned her, Ygritte grinded her hips back up against him with a cheeky grin.

And then the next morning when Ygritte teased Jon about getting a little too comfortable.

"Did you pull a knife on me in the night?" Ygritte asked. Jon jumped up, clearly embarrassed.

"What's the matter? Can't be the first time you pressed your bone against a woman's a--? "

When she realized it probably was the first time, Ygritte continued her teasing flirtation.

"You're a boy whose never been with a girl?" she asked. "Don't your stones start to hurt if your bone never gets — "

"Don't call them that," Jon interrupted.

"What, stones? Or bone?" she asked.

"Neither," he said, not meeting her eyes. "Both."

  • Caitlyn Jenner won't appear on the upcoming season of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians."
  • A new clip from the 14th season premiere of the E! reality series shows how strained Caitlyn's relationship with the family has become.
  • In it, Kim Kardashian and her sisters are angered to hear that Caitlyn claimed in her memoir that their father, O.J. Simpson friend and attorney Robert Kardashian, had believed that Simpson was guilty in his 1995 murder trial.
  • The sisters say that's untrue and Kim declares that Caitlyn lied.
  • Watch the preview below.

A new preview clip from the upcoming season of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" is providing a clearer picture of why Caitlyn Jenner won't be appearing.

In the new video, Kim Kardashian West is angered when she gets a news alert that Caitlyn wrote about her father, Robert Kardashian, in her 2016 memoir without telling Kim about it.

Robert was a friend and an attorney for O.J. Simpson during the football player's 1995 murder trial. According to Caitlyn, Robert secretly confided in him that he knew Simpson was guilty and that he joined his legal team to get back at Kris Jenner — his ex-wife, Caitlyn's wife at the time, and a close friend of Simpson's alleged victim, Nicole Brown Simpson.

Kim responded to the news angrily: "It is so shady that Caitlyn came over and gave me the book, and then on the phone she said, 'Well, the final version has a few more things in it. But don't worry, it's nothing about you.' So she lied to me, because that is about me if it's about our dad."

Sisters Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian were similarly angered.

"That's not true," Khloe said.

"Dad so believed him," Kim added.

Kourtney then said, "Like to sell a book, you're going to make something up?"

In a confessional interview, Kim explained that her relationship with Caitlyn was already strained but she was trying to be supportive. But it sounds like this was the last straw. "If you talk about my dad, I will cut you," she said.

"I've always had Caitlyn's back," Kim then told her sisters. "But she is a liar. She is not a good person."

The 14th season of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" premieres Sunday at 9 p.m on E!.

The man behind 'Game of Thrones' has several TV shows in the works — here's everything you need to know about them

george rr martin emmy

Author George R.R. Martin is best known for his "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series, adapted by HBO into "Game of Thrones." But you may not have realized that Martin is involved with several other TV projects. The shows include new adaptations based on other novels he's written, and some series he is executive producing.

Keep reading for the full list of projects Martin is involved with.

"Nightflyers" (Syfy)

What it's about

Based on Martin's 1985 novella of the same name, "Nightflyers" will be a sci-fi thriller series set in outer space.

"The story follows eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system in the hopes of contacting alien life," Variety reported. "They travel aboard The Nightflyer - a ship with a small tight knit crew and a reclusive captain.

But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place they start to question each other, and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought."

Who's writing and producing the show

The script is being written by Jeff Buhler, who will also executive produce the series. Buhler is writing the screenplay for the remake of "Jacob's Ladder" and has written several other movies.

Additional executive producers include Robert Jaffe, Alison Rosenzweig, Michael Gaeta, Lloyd Ivan Miller and Alice P. Neuhauser.

Martin himself is not involved.

"Since I have an overall deal that makes me exclusive to HBO, I can't provide any writing or producing series to 'Nightflyers' should it go to series," Martin said in a May 2017 blog post. "But of course, I wish Jaffe and Buhler and their team the best of luck."

"Wild Cards" (Universal Cable Productions)

What it's about

"Wild Cards" is an anthology series written by a variety of sci-fi/fantasy authors. Here's a synopsis of the premise for "Wild Cards"as Martin explained:

"The shared world of the 'Wild Cards' diverged from our own on September 15, 1946 when an alien virus was released in the skies over Manhattan, and spread across an unsuspecting Earth.

Of those infected, 90% died horribly, drawing the black queen, 9% were twisted and deformed into jokers, while a lucky 1% became blessed with extraordinary and unpredictable powers and became aces. The world was never the same."

Who's writing and producing the show

The "Wild Cards" stories are mostly written by a large collective of authors, the full list of which is here. Martin has mainly edited the book series, though he has written several installments. He won't be writing any of the scripts for the TV series.

Martin's assistant editor and seasoned TV writer/producer Melinda M. Snodgrass is an executive producer on the project alongside Gregory Noveck, who previously worked for DC Entertainment and Syfy films.

"Who Fears Death" (HBO)

What it's about

Based on the award-winning sci-fi novel by Nnedi Okorafor, this series is currently in development for HBO. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic Africa and focuses on a woman born from a violent rape named Onyesonwu (which means "Who fears death?" in an ancient language).

The girl, who goes by Onye, realizes as she grows up that she has magical abilities. When she visits the spirit realm, she learns that a mysterious and powerful figure is trying to kill her.

As the synopsis explains, "Desperate to elude her would-be murderer and to understand her own nature, she embarks on a journey in which she grapples with nature, tradition, history, true love, and the spiritual mysteries of her culture, and ultimately learns why she was given the name she bears: Who Fears Death."

Who's writing and producing the show

Martin is an executive producer on the project, along with former HBO President Michael Lombardo and Angela Mancuso. In a September blog update, Martin revealed the script will be written by Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, whose resume includes producing hip-hop and civil rights documentaries.

Darrell Hammond breaks his silence about losing his 'SNL' Trump to Alec Baldwin

donald trump snl saturday night live

Darrell Hammond was for years the go-to impressionist for "Saturday Night Live." And his specialty was spot-on performances of presidents.

So when Donald Trump was going up against Hillary Clinton for president last year, and with the election coinciding with season 42 of "SNL," everyone thought Hammond, a former cast member, would be the guy to play Trump.

But in a shocking twist, "SNL" head Lorne Michaels brought in Alec Baldwin to play candidate Trump.

Hammond was suddenly forgotten, as Baldwin's explosive impersonation of Trump wowed audiences and led to him earlier this month winning an Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.

But it turns out Hammond didn't take losing the gig well.

In a revealing profile in The Washington Post published Wednesday, Hammond breaks his silence on how his Trump impersonation was passed over going into one of the most insane elections in modern times.

The comic had been a fixture on "SNL" since 1995, doing memorable impressions of not just Trump but Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and Sean Connery. He was also the show's announcer after its legendary voice, Don Pardo, died in 2014. So it came as a shock to Hammond to learn last September that he wasn't going to play Trump in season 42. And rather than give Hammond the news himself, Michaels had a producer, Steve Higgins, do it.

alec baldwin trump snl"I just started crying," Hammond told the paper. "In front of everyone. I couldn't believe it. I was in shock, and I stayed in shock for a long time. Everything wiped out. The brand, me, what I do. Corporate appearances canceled. It was a hell of a shock, and all of it was apparent to me in one breath. That ends me."

Hammond tried to distance himself from one of his most iconic impressions. He stopped doing it in his stand-up appearances. He and his girlfriend watched "Game of Thrones" on election night. His doctors prescribed him a beta blocker to calm his nerves and the drug Antabuse to keep him from drinking, according to The Post.

"I couldn't get on an elevator, couldn't walk through a lobby, couldn't turn on a television, couldn't walk down Broadway, couldn't go to my favorite diner, couldn't go anywhere," Hammond said. "People would literally pull up in their cars on the way to Lincoln Tunnel to say: 'What the hell happened? What in the world? Are you OK?' Like, 'Why would you give that job up?'"

Michaels told The Post that the reason for the change was that he "needed another force, on an acting level, to have the power that Trump was embodying then."

"The Darrell Trump ... it wasn't the Trump that had gotten darker," he said. "It was the Trump from 'The Apprentice.'"

Hammond now spends little time in New York City — when The Post caught up with him, he was doing a 45-minute set for $50,000 at a party held by Clinton fundraisers in Utah — though he recently came back to appear in Michael Moore's Broadway show, "The Terms of My Surrender." Yes, he does a little Trump while on stage.

Hammond said he didn't resent Baldwin at all. Baldwin, who addresses his Trump impersonation less and less while doing press these days, did send an email to The Post about the Hammond situation.

"I love and admire Darrell and I'm sorry that he is unhappy about how it all transpired," Baldwin wrote. "PS ... He can have the thing back whenever he likes, as far as I'm concerned."

Here's Hammond as Trump in a 2004 skit that also features the real Trump:

KUWTK THUMB

It's been 10 years since "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" first aired on E! in 2007. Whether you love or hate the show, the Kardashians yield an undeniable power in the world of pop culture.

From what they eat and how they dress to their controversial business ventures or what they do in their spare time, nearly every detail of the family member's lives has been documented either on their reality show, on one of their many related spin-offs, or on social media.

Ahead of the 14th season premiere of "KUWTK" this Sunday on E!, we've taken a look back to see how each family member has changed in the last decade.

Keep scrolling to see what each Kardashian-Jenner has been up to since we began keeping up with them.

In 2007, Kris Jenner worked with Ryan Seacrest to conceptualize a show about her family inspired by "The Osbournes."

Of course, that show was "KUWTK," which is about to enter its 14th season.

Since the start of "KUWTK," Kris has been an executive producer.

Now, the 61-year-old reality TV star is the textbook definition of a "momager," overseeing her children's professional affairs. She has made millions from the show and her own business ventures as well as her kids' earnings. In 2016 alone, she reportedly made $11.5 million.

Kris is also a grandmother to Mason Dash Disick, 7; Penelope Scotland Disick, 5; and Reign Aston Disick, 2; North West, 4; Saint West, 1; and 10-month-old, Dream Renée Kardashian. She has at least one more grandchild on the way, after Kim confirmed she is having a baby via a surrogate, though Kylie and Khloe are also reportedly expecting babies — so she could have another two more.

Before "KUWTK" started, Kim was known as Paris Hilton's friend.

She was 27 when the show first aired.

Hollywood's 'brandfather' talks his new role on 'Shark Tank,' working with 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake

$

red jacket

Rohan Oza was dubbed Hollywood's "brandfather" by The Hollywood Reporter in 2015, but his high-profile marketing deals with celebrities have only escalated since then.

After cutting his teeth scaling up brands like Sprite and Powerade for Coca-Cola in the early 2000s, Oza made a name for himself when he left the company and matched rapper 50 Cent with Vitamin Water for an endorsement deal. The drink saw a prodigious spike in sales as a result, and in 2007, Oza's former employer, Coca-Cola, acquired Vitamin Water from Glacéau for $4.2 billion.

Oza found similar success in 2016 when he brought on Justin Timberlake as an investor and partner in the sparkling, antioxidant drink Bai. Dr Pepper Snapple Group subsequently purchased Bai Brands for $1.7 billion.

Now, Oza is bringing his brand innovation and knowledge to the stage of ABC's "Shark Tank." He stars as a guest "shark" in the season premiere of the investment reality show, which airs Sunday at 8pm EST.

Business Insider talked to Oza about his celebrity deals, the shifting necessity of business school, and his desire to "help create the first billion dollar brand" on "Shark Tank."

John Lynch: Walk me through your experience on "Shark Tank." With your specific expertise, what were you able to bring to the table, or dais, as it were?

rohan oza shark tank abcRohan Oza: Look, I love "Shark Tank." The experience was amazing. I feel that America is one of the greatest countries in the world to be an entrepreneur, and what "Shark Tank" does is it taps into and fuels that entrepreneurial spirit. So, I loved the energy that came from funding people's dreams and building iconic brands. The difference that I could bring was that my expertise in food and beverage doesn't exist currently on the panel. And that's a trillion dollar industry that's getting disrupted because most of the things on the shelves today are bad for you, and millennials are all looking for products that are better for you. So the opportunity to disrupt the aisles, both in stores and online, in food and beverage is huge, and I want to help create the first billion dollar brand on "Shark Tank."

Lynch: Your most recent success was the billion-dollar sale of Bai. How did you get Justin Timberlake involved in that drink, and how crucial was he in the sale of it?

Oza: My business partner Ben and I were huge fans of Justin. When we met with him, he completely understood the vision of the brand, the mission, and actually became an owner in the company. He wasn't an endorser. He was an owner. He fought like an owner. He provided ideas and creativity like an owner, and because he believed in the mission of the company, he became a partner in the company. And that to me is the key: partnering with smart celebrities who want to be an owner in unique and differentiated companies.

Lynch:You set the blueprint for this, in a way, by bringing 50 Cent to Vitamin Water. What made that the right connection at that time?

50 centOza: At the time, Vitamin Water was a great product. It had real levels of vitamins, half the sugar of sodas and juices, cool packaging. But it was very medicinal. And people were like, "Woah, vitamins and water. That can't taste that great." So we needed to create some disruption. 50 was one of the most iconic musicians at the time, and he was very health-conscious and fitness-centric. I had a candid conversation where I said, "I don't have the money to pay you," and he said, "Don't worry. I'll take it in equity because I believe in the brand, and I believe in myself." And that became the construct of the equity model that everybody wants to do today.

Lynch: To what extent did your experience working at Coke fuel your interest in these healthier alternative beverages?

Oza: My experience at Coca-Cola was great, in that it helped me learn how to build brands. But a lot of the brands that I was on at Coca-Cola were already established, so I was growing established brands. I learned that Coca-Cola can take brands that are really good and scale them, but they have a tough time creating brands from scratch. So I basically carved out a living working with founders to build the brands of tomorrow, that ultimately, the Cokes, and the Pepsi's, and the General Mills of the world end up buying, because it's very difficult for them to create it internally.

Lynch: Generally speaking, how do you decide which celebrities to pursue for the brands you're involved with?

Oza: A lot of the time, I brainstorm with my team which celebrities have the best DNA fit to your brand. And then, we make sure the celebrities are big fans of the brand. So with Jennifer Aniston [for her endorsement deal with Smartwater], it actually happened during March Madness. I brought all of the women in the office together because they are generally more insightful than the guys, and we did a top 16 women in entertainment, and we did like a March Madness bracketology. Jennifer Aniston ending up winning it because Jennifer had the best DNA fit from a purity, from an aesthetic, from a fitness angle — all the elements that Smartwater matched. Oh, and by the way, she was a huge fan of the brand. And that deal has now been going on for close to 13 years, and she looks pretty much the same today in the ads as she did 13 years ago. She clearly is not aging. It must be the water.

Lynch: On "Shark Tank," what does it take to convince you to invest in one of these up-and-coming products?

Oza: The interesting thing about "Shark Tank" is that out of the tank, we're all friends. All of the sharks are good friends, very supportive. They gave me great coaching. But the minute we're in the seats, or in the tank, the gloves or, in this case, the mouth guards come off, and the teeth come out. It's to each their own, and I realized that you have to fight hard to win the brands that you believe in. And I was looking for founders who had unique, differentiated ideas, and passion and conviction to go win with their ideas, because I'm giving them my hard-earned money.

Lynch: As a fellow University of Michigan alum, I have to ask about your experience going to business school there. Do you still see business school as a necessary path for the prospective students of your field?

Oza: I'm glad that I went to Michigan because Michigan's network is unbelievable. Someone told me the other day, "You guys from Michigan are like a cult." And it is kind of like that. There's no other university that could call someone a "Michigan Man." An "Ohio State Man" doesn't even roll off the tongue. So the network that I built and the opportunities I got from Michigan were amazing. I think that people should go to business school if it's the right fit for them. I.e., I want a change of career. I want to expand my network. I want to better understand some of the fundamentals as it relates to building and managing businesses. I think business school is very valuable for those elements, and if that is what you need to do, then you should go to business school. I don't think it's a pre-requisite these days the way it was when I went, to necessarily get into companies, but it can definitely be a value-added tool to help you be stronger when you do get into companies.

Lynch: Since you were in business school, what has shifted in the world that makes it less necessary, in a way?

Oza: I think the ability to create startups, whether it's in tech or food and beverage or CPG, and people are doing it at a younger age, is more prominent now than ever before. And so smart, talented people who have never had MBAs have created companies, and I've partnered with many of those founders. So I think that you don't necessarily have to have that MBA, but business schools are starting to adapt. When Stephen Ross gave Michigan $100 million [to further fund the Ross Business School named after him], they've used that to significantly improve their facilities and their teaching approach. So I think that business schools will adapt to the tools that you need today to build brands in the modern era.

Lynch: What advice do you have for young entrepreneurs who are following in your footsteps specifically?

Oza: Well, a few of them. One is, "be your brand." So don't market it — live your brand. The second is, "have an original idea," because original ideas always rise to the top. And the third would be, "bring passion and energy to all those around you," because that's infectious, and that's what helps create an amazing culture in a company.

Lynch: What are the next steps for you at this point? Are there any brands you're eyeing that you can tell me about?

Oza: Yeah, I have a few that I'm very excited about. At CAVU, the fund that I co-created, we've made 16 investments in the last two years. It's kind of crazy, but we believe in all our brands because they're all disrupting the environment, in terms of "better-for-you" products. The ones that I'm very excited about: One Bar, it's a protein bar that's 20 grams of protein and one gram of sugar, and it almost tastes too good to be true; WTRMLN WTR, which has twice the electrolytes of Gatorade, but it's all-natural and tastes amazing; and Chef's Cut, it's the fastest growing beef jerky in the country, it's 30 grams of protein in a bag, and it literally tastes like steak in a bag.

Lynch: Between your experience on "Shark Tank" and in your recent investments, where do you see this generation's brand mindset shifting toward?

Oza: I believe that the millennial audience is, now more than ever, looking for "better-for-you" products for their generation and are rejecting the products of the past. The high sugar, high carb, high fructose corn syrup, highly processed, low-nutrient-value products are being rejected in favor of the brands of tomorrow. And that's what I think makes the entrepreneurial angle in food and beverage very exciting, and it's why on "Shark Tank," I love bidding on some of these really innovative ideas in the food and beverage space, because these entrepreneurs are truly disruptive. And this year, more seven-figure deals were done this year than in any other season prior, because the scale of the brands and the scale of the founders is getting bigger and bigger on "Shark Tank," and making it really exciting.

In today's streaming age, initial airings of important TV episodes are no longer the cultural events they once were.

According to Nielsen's measurements of the top network telecasts of all time, the top 20 most-watched TV episodes ever all date back at least a decade.

For example, the "Seinfeld" series finale, in 1998 — which had a very mixed reaction — was the most recent episode to crack the top 100.

Decades-old miniseries like "Roots" and "The Thorn Birds" and finale episodes of the most popular shows in TV history dominate the list.

We compiled the data from Nielsen on the most-watched broadcasts ever to create this list of the top episodes of TV.

Note: We've excluded all live broadcasts, including Super Bowls and award shows, as well as movies broadcast on TV, all of which appear prominently in Nielsen's top 100.
