Regis Philbin's Reunion With Kathie Lee 'Today' Was 'Like Riding A Bike'

0
0

regis philbin

"Hi little girl. It's me! Regis is back!"

Philbin's still got it.

Regis Philbin reunited with longtime co-anchor Kathie Lee Gifford this morning on NBC's Today show. The two co-hosted ABC's morning show "Live With Regis and Kathie Lee" together for 15 years before Gifford left in 2000.

How was their reunion?

Philbin was a riot. From strolling in late, to making wisecracks at Matt Lauer—he asked Matt if he was into porn (jokingly)—asking for Ann Curry (and why she wasn't saluting him) and flubbing Gifford's co-host's name multiple times, Rege stole the spotlight.

One of the best bits early on actually comes from Matt Lauer when he asks the duo about reuniting:

Matt: Do you think Kathie Lee is going to be like the human equivalent of riding a bike ... even though you haven't ridden him for 12 years ... you jump right back on?"

Regis: "Is Matt into porn, what's happening here?"

Matt (quickly following up): "Do you think this is going to be just like picking up where you left off?"

Watch the opening bit followed by Regis and Kathie Lee's hosting below:

CBS Takes A Stab At ABC With Fake Press Release Promoting 'Dancing ON The Stars'

hope solo maksim chmerkovsky dancing with the stars

Saying CBS is bitter about ABC getting the green light for "The Glass House" is an understatement.

Last Monday, ABC launched their "Big Brother" copy-cat show, "The Glass House," which features contestants living in a house, knocked off one by one with the remaining house guest winning a cash prize, almost mirroring the former long-running CBS summer hit.

In a last-minute attempt, CBS tried—and failed—to get a judge to issue a temporary restraining order to prevent ABC's show from airing last Monday.

So, if you can't beat 'em, CBS decided to get even.

In what may be the most bitter PR stunt ever, CBS issued a fake press release for proposed show, "Dancing on the Stars."

Clearly a jab at ABC's popular "Dancing with the Stars," the show would follow celebrities as they perform dancing on the graves of "Hollywood's most iconic and well-beloved stars of stage and screen."

From the release:

“This very creative enterprise will bring a new sense of energy and fun that’s totally unlike anything anywhere else, honest,” said a CBS spokesperson, who also revealed that the Company has been working with a secret team for several months on the creation of the series, which was completely developed by the people at CBS independent of any other programming on the air.

… “After all,” the spokesperson added, “people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.”

Seriously, CBS? What's there to be embarrassed by?

Ratings and reviews for "The Glass House" have been atrocious.

Let it go, guys. You lost the battle. Shake the dirt off your shoulders, get back up on your horse and continue riding. This is just making it look worse.

Read the entire (fake) press release below:

CBS ANNOUNCES DEVELOPMENT OF “DANCING ON THE STARS,” AN EXCITING AND COMPLETELY ORIGINAL REALITY PROGRAM THAT OWES ITS CONCEPT AND EXECUTION TO NOBODY AT ALL

Los Angeles, June 20, 2012 – Subsequent to recent developments in the creative and legal community, CBS Television today felt it was appropriate to reveal the upcoming launch of an exciting, ground-breaking and completely original new reality program for the CBS Television Network.

The dazzling new show, DANCING ON THE STARS, will be broadcast live from the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and will feature moderately famous and sort of well-known people you almost recognize competing for big prizes by dancing on the graves of some of Hollywood’s most iconic and well-beloved stars of stage and screen.

The cemetery, the first in Hollywood, was founded in 1899 and now houses the remains of Andrew “Fatty” Arbuckle, producer Cecil B. DeMille, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Paul Muni, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, George Harrison of the Beatles and Dee Dee Ramone of the Ramones, among many other great stars of stage, screen and the music business. The company noted that permission to broadcast from the location is pending, and that if efforts in that regard are unsuccessful, approaches will be made to Westwood Village Memorial Park, where equally scintillating luminaries are interred.

“Given the current creative and legal environment in the reality programming business, we’re sure nobody will have any problem with this title or our upcoming half-hour comedy for primetime, POSTMODERN FAMILY.”

“After all,” the spokesperson added, “people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.”

From a kitten theme song to a Simpsons' couch gag, there are plenty of parodies of "Game of Thrones," the hit HBO series that follows the lords and ladies of the Seven Kingdoms.

Today, Mother Jones released three super-PAC political ads for main characters Daenerys Targaryen, Joffrey Baratheon and Robb Stark

We laughed ... but only because they're so outrageous. However, we must admit, the narrator's voice is pretty awesome.

Ann Curry May Soon Be Ousted As Anchor Of 'Today'

Ann Curry

Just a year after succeeding Meredith Vieira as Matt Lauer's co-anchor on the "Today" show, NBC is said to be preparing to replace Ann Curry, according to The New York Times' Brian Stelter.

The Times reports that private negotiations are currently underway to transition Curry, who has been with the show for 14 years, to a different role—possibly as a foreign correspondent, which would play up her in-the-field journalistic abilities.

While Curry has not had a television agent in years, she has reportedly hired well-known attorney, Robert Barnett, to represent her in the upcoming negotiations. And NBC is pushing to have everything in order before their Olympics coverage begins in July.

News of Curry's possible departure comes after poor ratings on "Today," with "ABC's "Good Morning America" beating it for the first time ever this spring.

No word on contenders for Curry's coveted position, but one name being thrown into the mix is co-host of the show’s 9 a.m. hour, Savannah Guthrie. Stay tuned.

Does Jon Stewart REALLY Read All The Books For Author Interviews?

0
0

jon stewart speaking

Any fan of Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" knows the host holds weekly guest author interviews on the Comedy Central news block.

Usually, the majority of authors come on the show promoting a book and Stewart is an expert on all items of the work.

However, a few have wondered, does he really have time to read every book cover to cover or does he simply skim through a few important chapters?

A Quora user claiming to be a previous "Daily Show" intern revealed not only the author selection process, but also that Stewart does indeed read through every book.

From Quora:

"There is a producer in charge of booking all guests, and she receives just gobs and gobs of mail from all sorts of authors, musicians, agents, etc. She splits everything up into "definite no," "give it some thought," and "we definitely want to interview this person" piles, and then dives in. She doesn't necessarily read/watch/listen to everything, but she gets a good sense of the guests that would make compelling interviews, and then discusses that list with Jon.

If somebody is chosen to come on the show, Jon does indeed read/listen to/watch that person's to-be-plugged material. Generally cover-to-cover. The man really is quite impressive in the amount of work he does for the show."

Wonder how large that "definite no" section gets.

Still unsure? Stewart told Terry Gross of NPR's "Fresh Air" last year that if he has the time, he will indeed read the book cover to cover.

From the NPR

GROSS: Two people want to know if you actually read the books of the guests that you have on.

Mr. STEWART: I read the book's both, back front cover.

(Soundbite of laughter)

Mr. STEWART: It depends on, you know, some weeks we have four books and they can be thick ones and, you know, historical nonfiction. But I read pretty quickly, and I try and read as much of the books as I possibly can. And I have a pretty good ability of getting through it, retaining a good deal of its information, for a four to six hour period.

(Soundbite of laughter)

Mr. STEWART: And then having it disappear from my brain for the rest...

So, there you have it from Stewart himself. (Not that we'd expect the host to suggest he doesn't do his homework.)

After walking out to greet Letterman on his late-night show, Baldwin told the host that it's hard to keep his pants up now that he has lost so much weight.

And then he dropped his pants, revealing his bare thighs.

And then Letterman did it too.

It is both frightening and funny at the same time. Watch below.

9 Things We Learned From Charlie Sheen's Crazy 'Playboy' Interview

0
0

charlie sheen

It's been more than a year since Charlie Sheen took to the television, radio and online airwaves to deliver "winning" rants.

Now, the 46-year-old actor is returning to what he says will be his final television stint on FX's "Anger Management" June 28th.

In an extended interview with Playboy, the actor opened up about his media meltdown—warlocks, adonis DNA, tiger blood and more—what he believes really got him fired from CBStravel ling with his famous father and his children.

Sheen also tells us where we can find the answer to all of life's questions.

Sound like another 20/20 interview? Not exactly; however, it's a good read.

You can read the entire Playboy article here, or click below for all the highlights.

What happened to Sheen? He thinks he cracked.

Too many outside pressures caused Sheen to break down.

"It was the buildup of all the time I’ve been in the business, the divorces and everything. I started to unravel. I was mad about having to play the game—not that I was playing it well, but I’d been doing it for so long. I finally just said the things I had always been thinking. [laughs] But in the middle of a psychotic break."

Sheen has no clue what the warlock bit was about, but a society came after him.

Apparently, Sheen just liked the way "warlock" sounded.

"It’s got war in it; it’s got a kah sound. War-lock. Remember the Salem warlock society? They were going to cast a hex on me," Sheen told Playboy. "Bring it on! I’ll eat your hex for breakfast."

So what about the tiger blood? Adonis DNA? The magical "Charlie Sheen" drug?

Sheen says they all came out of nowhere. Each one was a completely random unplanned outburst.

"The tiger blood? I don’t know. It’s just a very dangerous animal. And there’s a tiger in "Apocalypse Now," by the way, so maybe there’s a connection there. Adonis DNA? I don’t know what the f--k that was about. That was just stupid."

In Case You're Worried About The TV Business, The "Today Show" Raked In $485 Million Of Revenue Last Year

0
0

Savannah Guthrie

The New York Times and Wall Street Journal both published articles today describing how NBC News' ratings are slipping.

And the ratings not just slipping relative to the competition: The competition's ratings are slipping, too.

NBC Nightly News is down 11% year over year in the key 25-54 year-old demographic, Brian Stelter of the New York Times reports.

ABC's World News is down 8%.

(CBS, startlingly, is up 1%. Well done!)

Although folks in the TV industry attribute the slippage to poor-decision-making and show problems, we can't help but think there's a larger force at work.

Namely, the demise of the TV business.

(See: Don't Mean To Be Alarmist, But The TV Business May Be About To Collapse).

But it's important to keep things in perspective.

Although many former TV viewers now get their news and entertainment via the Internet, TV is still doing quite well, thank you very much.

The ailing "Today Show," for example, took in $485 million in revenue last year.

How much is "$485 million"?

A lot.

When the blockbuster-online-success-story Huffington Post sold last year, it had about $30 million of revenue.

When the blog "TechCrunch" sold to AOL, it had less than $10 million of revenue.

No wonder everyone wants to work in TV.

These Apps Should Be Turned Into Game Shows

0
0

Draw Something

Last week, CBS announced a Ryan Seacrest-produced game show based on the hit app "Draw Something" is in the works, which, surprisingly, might not be the worst idea in the world.

Zynga's guessing game asks users to draw images of a selection of their choice (think Pictionary) and send it to their friends to solve.

The show will be similar to NBC's late '80s quiz game "Win, Lose or Draw" which saw celebrities essentially play charades with pictures in the comfort of Burt Reynold's living room.

With a slew of board-games-turned-films in the works, we decided to take a look at other apps that should be turned into game shows.

Angry Birds

The popular game by Rovio Mobile lets users soar birds through the air to destroy egg-stealing pigs and their castles.

A cartoon is already in the works, but what about a "Wipeout"-style game show? There can even be teams (birds and pigs, obviously) competing against one another.

Words With Friends

During the '80s, Chuck Woolery hosted game show, "Scrabble."

This could be re-envisioned on the small screen.

Maybe Woolery would even be interested in a modern-day version of the game.

Bag It!

Hidden Variable Studios' Bag It! asks players to literally bag groceries in Tetris-like fashion.

How would this work on television? Simple.

Think "Supermarket Sweep," with rounds specifically devoted to bagging.

Sookie's In Heaps Of Trouble—Here's This Week's 'True Blood' Recap

0
0

debbie true blood

Warning: This post contains spoilers.

This week, Sookie has a lot of explaining to do as her secrets begin to unravel.

(How long did she think she could keep a newly born vampire and a dead body hidden?)

Meanwhile, we learn more about Pam's creepy background, watch Jason deal with his sex demons and Bill and Eric are still caught up with the Vampire Authority.

Also, people start to ask questions about Debbie Pelt's absence. Yeah, about that ...

Tara gets used to her new powers.

Tara escapes from Sookie and Lafayette to explore her new ultra-fast senses.

She comes across a human needing vehicle assistance. Immediately, Tara's vampire instincts take over. However, when she sees her reflection in the human's car window, she promptly comes to her senses, apologizes and runs off leaving the girl unharmed.

So much for any brain damage.

Sookie goes looking for Tara and unleashes some of her faerie power on Pam.

With Tara on the loose, Sookie asks Pam to summon her friend. Pam tells her has more pressing matters to deal with (Eric missing for four days takes slight precedence over Sookie's problems). We agree.

Sookie doesn't like the answer and blasts her with some faerie nonsense.

Turns out Pam's crazy.

We get another glimpse into Pam's past in 1905. Look like she asked Eric to make her a vampire. He initially refused telling her she doesn't understand the responsibility: "Becoming a maker's an eternal commitment."

Yeah, Pam didn't like that answer.

She slit her wrists and gave Eric an ultimatum: watch her die or make her immortal.

Clearly, we know how this turned out and soon Pam will learn the depth of Eric's words.

Ann Curry Will Reap BIG Benefits From NBC's Ousting

0

ann curry

NBC will be paying dearly for ousting Ann Curry from the "Today" show, which is reported to be happening next week.

According to TMZ, Curry signed a long-term contract guaranteeing her $10 million a year when she agreed to take over as a "Today" show co-anchor.

The contract supposedly guaranteed that amount for three years.

However, its being reported NBC doesn't want to pay up the remaining $20 million. Rather, the network wants to pay her $10 million and make her a foreign correspondent.

NBC and Curry's lawyers are currently at odds as Curry, a 14-year veteran at the "Today" show, is opting for the $20 million and exit papers

The network has already chosen a successor to Curry in Savannah Guthrie. An announcement is expected later this week or early next.

Here's What Aaron Sorkin's 'The Newsroom' Does Right (And Wrong)

0
0

The Newsroom Jeff Bridges

HBO's newest show, Aaron Sorkin's "The Newsroom," premiered on Sunday, to middling reviews.

In HBO terms, anything less than raves means panic-mode, and they responded by giving away the pilot online for free (see it here).

After watching it, it's clear this is a show worth watching, though not without some glaring faults.

So before Sunday's second episode airs, we'll tell you what was good, and what was not so good.

WRONG: Get Over Yourself, Sorkin

At times the show is so self-righteous it's corny. The moral seems to be that nobody in the media is properly delivering the news, so nobody is being held accountable, and America is suffering because of it.

Apparently, this news station is full of superheroes who will save America by season five. If this flawless journalism becomes a trend, and this particular newsroom handles every piece of breaking news better than anyone else, it's going to get old fast.

RIGHT: Jeff Daniels

"Newsroom" features a very solid cast including Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterston, Allison Pill (standout of the group), and Dev Patel, but this is the Jeff Daniels show, and he takes full advantage of the pages upon pages of dialogue he has at his disposal.

WRONG: Too Many In-Office Relationships

We just don't care ... yet. Granted, it takes more than one hour to become emotionally invested in characters, so this could change, but it could also get even worse.

Maybe by season two (there's probably going to be a season two) we will care who is dating who, but not right now. And not for the next few episodes, so hopefully these relationships play out slowly and aren't shoved down our throats.

8 Things We Just Learned From Aaron Sorkin's Live HBO.com Q&A

0
0

aaron sorkin

Wednesday afternoon, Aaron Sorkin held a live one-hour Q&A on HBO.com to answer fan questions.

The creator of HBO's new show "The Newsroom" has received a lot of media flack over his portrayal of working journalists, so the opportunity gave viewers the chance to ask Sorkin anything.

For the most part, Sorkin played it safe, answering questions about how long it took him to come up with the pilot (nearly a year, not including the six weeks for writing), his biggest challenges while penning a television show, and his love for "His Girl Friday."

However, there were some great moments where Sorkin discussed his decision to cover past news, his knowledge of Pop-Tarts and his alleged "sorkinisms."

Don't plan on seeing any guest appearances by real reporters on "The Newsroom."

Q: Do you have any plans to guest-star any real reporters like Christiane Amanpour, Jake Tapper, or anyone else on the show?

Sorkin: "Real people will only play themselves in news footage. There are some shows where stunt casting is fun (in fact I've played myself on 30 Rock and Entourage) but I think on this show it would just seem out of place. These characters inhabit a heightened and idealized version of a newsroom."

Sorkin draws from old (recent) news because he didn't want to make up fake news.

Q: "You chose to tie storylines to prior current events. What was your reasoning behind this and how recent do you plan regarding current events?"

Sorkin: "The show's set in the recent past because I didn't want to make up fake news. I wanted to do "His Girl Friday" set against the backdrop of actual news events. I knew when the first season started and when it ended and it was a year ago this month that the staff and I began wallpapering the writers room with every single news event from that 18 month period."

Sorkin admits that "The Newsroom" may not have been his best work.

Q: "From working on Social Network to West Wing (both amazing works of art), what is the biggest difference between writing for film and TV?"

Sorkin: "When I'm writing a screenplay and it's not going well (which is most of the time) I can put it down for a few days. The only part about television I don't like is that because of the hard deadlines I have to write when I'm not writing well. I have to put a script on the table that I know is weak and we're going to shoot that script and you're going to see it. In a 10 episode season, one of the episodes is going to be your 10th best and I'm not goo [sic] enough to have my 10th best script seen by a couple of million people but that's what's going to happen. It's a tough pill to swallow.

WATCH: Ann Curry's Teary 'Today' Show Departure Announcement

0
0

ann curry

After a week of speculation, Ann Curry confirmed late Wednesday that she is, in fact, leaving her role as co-anchor on the "Today" show.

Curry broke the news to USA Today in a 40-minute phone interview, saying she expects Thursday to "be a bit of a tough day ... I'm going to have to tell our viewers. That's what makes me more emotional than anything. I don't want to leave them. I love them. And I will really miss them."

But while Curry may be down, she is definitely not out.

The 55-year-old journalist will remain with the network in a new role as anchor-at-large and NBC News national/international correspondent.

Curry's new contract, that she says lasts "a significant amount of time," more than just a few years, was negotiated on her behalf by lawyer Robert Barnett.

She declines to discuss her salary but says reports of $10 million or $20 million a year are inaccurate, "I can say that I'd love to earn that much."

But before a contract was in place or Curry had a chance to announce her anchor position departure, rumors swirled regarding her ousting by NBC.

"I don't know who has been behind the leaks, but no question they've hurt deeply," Curry revealed in the interview with the paper.

As for the show's recent ratings drop, she says, "I know I am not to blame for the ratings worries. And my bosses have said to me there are many factors involved. There is no doubt that the rating wars have become meaner and less focused on our responsibilities as journalists."

"You know, Matt and I have had great on-air chemistry for 14 years, been part of the No. 1 winning team for a history-making number of years," Curry continued. "That said, I just finished my freshman year as co-host. In every single co-host's first year, there have been kinks to be worked out, and perhaps I deserve as much blame for that as anyone."

So does she think she was given enough time to work out those kinks? "No, I do not," she revealed.

Would she have liked more time? "Oh, sure I would have," she says.

But instead, Curry will be heading up a new seven-person unit for NBC while Savannah Guthrie is still the rumored frontrunner to take her coveted place.

savannah guthrie today show

NBC just confirmed Savannah Guthrie is the new "Today" show co-anchor.

Guthrie was featured alongside co-host Matt Lauer on this morning's show; however, no indication was made as to whether she was taking over for Ann Curry throughout the broadcast.

From the announcement:

“As soon as Savannah joined NBC News she was a standout, reporting for every franchise in the news division and rising through the ranks," said TODAY executive producer Jim Bell. "She has a one-of-a-kind combination of sharp wit and approachability, and our viewers value her journalistic skills and legal background just as much as her humor and charm. She can effortlessly go from interviewing the Secretary of State to jumping Olympic-sized hurdles on the plaza. I’m thrilled to welcome Savannah as our newest co-anchor, and along with Matt, Al and Natalie, we’ve got the best morning team in the business.”

Guthrie formerly served as NBC News White House Correspondent and co-host of MSNBC's "The Daily Rundown."
